Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood threw off a mound down in Arizona yesterday during the first day of workouts. He is not yet ready to throw in a game, or even throw hard, but he is moving in the right direction. No one is saying when he will return, but no one is rushing him either.
The Cubs rotation is currently full with Carlos Zambrano, Mark Prior, Greg Maddux, Glendon Rusch, And Jerome Williams. Many young arms will be competing for a spot but will most likely be sent back down to AAA. Rich Hill and Angel Guzman, the gems of the farm will most likely start at Iowa.
Wood might return to the pen, where he spent some time last year, to continue to build arm strength. Wade Miller is also throwing and will try for a spot later in the season.
Wood has been plagued by injuries, limiting him to 10 starts in 2005 and 22 starts in 2004.
