History

On June 6, 1974, the National Football League announced that Seattle would have a franchise for the 1976 season. On June 17, 1975, the nickname "Seahawks" was selected from 20,365 entries and 1,741 different names. One hundred fifty-one suggested the "Seahawks."

On December 18, 1975, the Seahawks agreed to a 20-year lease agreement to play all games in the Kingdome.

Jack Patera, defensive line coach of the Minnesota Vikings, was named their first head coach. On August 1, 1976, the Seahawks played their first game before 60,825 fans in the Kingdome. San Francisco held on to defeat Seattle, 27-20, as Jim Zorn was tackled on the 49ers’ two-yard line on the last play.

On August 29, 1976 the Seahawks captured their first victory, a 17-16 preseason win over San Diego, as Ron Howard caught a three-yard Jim Zorn pass for the winning touchdown with only 13 seconds remaining in the game.

On October 10, 1976, the Seahawks won the Expansion Bowl with a 13-10 victory over host Tampa Bay. Linebacker Mike Curtis blocked a Tampa Bay field goal attempt with 42 seconds remaining to preserve the victory.

On January 26, 1983, Chuck Knox was named head coach of the Seahawks. Knox previously had served as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams (1973–77) and the Buffalo Bills (1978–82).

On December 18, 1983, the Seahawks clinched their first playoff berth with 24-6 win over New England. On December 24, 1983, Dave Krieg threw three touchdown passes and Curt Warner rushed for 99 yards in a 31-7 win over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Wild Card Game.
