The Boston Red Sox signed shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a one-year deal valued at $3 million. Gonzalez batted .264 with five home runs and 45 RBI last season for the Florida Marlins. In Boston, he will replace Edgar Renteria, who the Red Sox traded to the Atlanta Braves in December 2005. Gonzalez should be a defensive upgrade for the Sox. Renteria, who struggled in Boston last year, committed a major league worst 30 errors.
