In a press conference today, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig announced a formal investigation of steroids in baseball to be headed by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell.

The Maine Democrat, besides being an attorney and a former federal judge, is a part owner of the Boston Red Sox and serves on the board of Disney, which owns ESPN. He was also chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland several years ago.

The investigation was spurred in part by the book Game of Shadows, accusing Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, Jason Giambi and other superstars of taking steroids at the height of their careers. Exactly what reform or punishments might take place as a result of the probe is pure speculation at this point, but it is already being compared to the Dowd Report, the results of the investigation into Pete Rose's betting.
