  • Cy Young allows a hit after going 23 innings without allowing one. The streak began on April 25 and included a perfect game.


  • Pete Schneider, playing right field for Vernon in the Pacific Coast League, went 6-7 with 5 home runs, a double hit off the top of the wall, and 14 RBI. The only time he was retired was on a hard hit line drive to center field. Vernon went on to win the game 35-11.




  • The Chicago White Sox score at least 1 run in every inning during a 12-8 win over the Boston Red Sox. Only five teams in AL history have scored a run in every inning of a 9 inning game.






  • Albert Belle is fined for one week for throwing a baseball at a fan. The fan was heckling him about his problems with alcohol and calling him Joey.





  • The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 14-8 in a game that would take 4:22 to play. The time ties the record for the longest non-extra inning game ever played.


  • Rick Ankiel, then a promising pitching prospect for the St. Louis Cardinals, is sent down to AAA after throwing 5 wild pitches in his last outing. In 2001 he would walk 25 batters in 24 IP.



  • Manny Ramirez is 0-3 in his first game as an American citizen. Manny ran to the outfield waving a small American flag after the Dominican Republic native passed his citizenship test the day before.


  • In his first game off the DL, Ken Griffey Jr. hits a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the 11th to give the Cincinnati Reds a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals. The Reds were losing 4-1 after the Nationals scored 3 in the top of the 11, but scored 4 in the bottom of the inning to win it.
