Marty Bergen (Martin Bergen) was born on October 25, 1871 in North Brookfield, Massachusetts. He made his Major League debut on April 17, 1896 for the Boston Beaneaters. In 1896, his rookie year, he hit .269 with 4 home runs and 37 RBI. Bergen played for the Boston Beaneaters for his entire 4 year career.
Most people believe that Marty Bergen's best season was 1898, when he hit for a .280 average and knocked in 60 runs.
The real story behind this man wasn't his playing career, but his death. Bergen's playing career came to an abrupt halt in 1899 when he was just 27 years old. His family had long suspected that he was going insane and when he snapped he proved they were right. He killed his wife and two kids (age 6 and 3) by beating them to death with an axe. He then took his own life by slashing his throat with such force that he nearly severed his head. His father found the bodies.
