Each year, this award is given to the rookie in each league who receives the most votes by a panel from the Baseball Writers Association of America. The panel is made up of two writers from each city that houses a major league franchise.
For the first two seasons after the award was created in 1947, only one major-league Rookie of the Year was named. Beginning in 1949, a separate Rookie of the Year has been named for each league.
