- New York Giants Pitcher Carl Hubbell pitches two complete games in one as he blanks the St. Louis Cardinals over 18 innings, before the Giants finally broke the scoreless deadlock to win 1-0 in the first game of a double header at the Polo Grounds. The Giants would also win the second game 1-0 in nine innings.
- Boston Red Sox ace Roger Clemens is shackled with his first loss of the season by the Toronto Blue Jays. Clemens started the season 14-0.
- Colombian soccer player Andres Escobar was shot to death in Medellin. 10 days earlier he had accidentally scored an own goal in World Cup competition.
