Biography[]

Born on May 15, 1967 in Detroit, Michigan, Boston Red Sox pitcher John Smoltz (John Andrew Smoltz) played for the Atlanta Braves for the first 20 years of his career before joining the Sox in January 2009. Smoltz broke into the bigs on July 23, 1988 with the Braves, and put up a 5.48 ERA in 64 innings pitched in 1988, his rookie year.

Most people believe that John Smoltz's best season was 1996, when he posted a 2.94 ERA, won 24 games and struck out 276 batters.

Smoltz is the first pitcher ever to record 200 wins and 150 saves, having made a remarkable transition from an ace starter to one of the game's best closers—and then back to a starter again—in the 2000s.
