Biography[]

Joseph Edward "Joe" Collins (December 3, 1922 - August 30, 1989) (born Joseph Edward Kollonige) was a Major League Baseball player. He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

On September 25, 1948 he began his major league career playing for the New York Yankees, wearing uniform number 42. The next year he was given number 41, which he wore from 1949 through 1952. From 1953 to his retirement in 1957 he wore uniform number 15. He played primarily as a first baseman (715 games), with a few games in right field and a very small number of games in other outfield positions (total number of games as an outfielder: 114). His last game was on September 29, 1957. His entire major league career was spent with the Yankees. He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies at the start of the 1958 season, but chose to retire rather than join the Phillies, thus cancelling the trade.

He died in Union, New Jersey.
