He signed with Valencia of Spain for the 2001-02 season, then was sent on loan to Ourense in Spain’s LEB (second division) so he could receive more playing time. He came to Spain after breakthrough season in Argentina as a 20-year-old in 2000-01 season. Played in the LEB All-Star Game in 2002 and Argentina’s All-Star Game in 2001. Captured the attention of NBA scouts with his performance at the World Basketball Championship for Young Men played in Japan in August 2001. Averaged 13.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists for third place Argentina. His rebound average was in the top 10 for the competition. Scored 21 points in a quarterfinal victory over Australia. Tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds vs. USA Basketball squad that won the competition. Holds a German passport.
In his first season in Spain’s second division, averaged 12.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.24 blocked shots. Shot 58.7 percent on two-point field goals but only 29.4 percent on three-pointers and 58.4 percent from line.
In his first season in Argentina’s top division with meaningful playing time, averaged 16.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots. Shot 60 percent from two-point range and only 26.6 percent from three-point territory.
Scouting reports indicate he loves to drive to the basket and finish around the rim. Gets rebounds with excellent leaping ability and effort and will block shots. Needs work on his passing and perimeter shooting.
