In 2006 he was one of many pitchers the Indians used to try to fill the place of Bob Wickman as closer. During this experiment, Carmona recorded four losses and three blown saves over the course of seven games. Carmona was shortly replaced by Tom Mastny and returned to the position of starting pitcher.
In 2007, Carmona took the place of an injured Cliff Lee in the starting rotation, and surprised much of the national media by actually being pretty good.
