Yesterday the AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll was shifted around a little after the number 1 team, and undefeated University of North Carolina Tar Heels were beat in their home court by the 12-7 unranked Maryland Terrapins, 82-80. In fact, UNC was not the only Top 25 team to go down yesterday, number 4 UCLA (16-2) was beat by the unranked USC Trojans 72-63. Number 23 Clemson fell to the 5th ranked Duke Blue Devils, 9 Texas A & M fell to Kansas State, number 15 Mississippi fell to Auburn, number 16 Pittsburgh fell to Cincinnati, number 24 Miami (FL) fell to NC State, and number 25 ASU fell to Stanford.
So, as you can see, the Top 25 will experience a HUGE shift, which includes a new number 1 team. Who will be the new number 1 team, might you ask??? I think it's quite obvious.
Gist and Osby led the Terps to an upset victory over Tyler Hansbrough and the UNC Tar Heels, 82-80.
1. Memphis (17-0)- After yesterday's beatdown of Southern Miss (83-47), I think it's obvious that they are ranked number 1. The Tigers are led by Junior Guard, Chris Douglas-Roberts, who is averaging 16.4 PPG, 4.8 RPG, and 1.5 APG in Memphis' 17 games this season.
2. Kansas (18-0)- Kansas, the second of the two remaining undefeated teams, will move up one to number 2. Yesterday, Kansas, led by Mario Chalmers' 18 points, beat the unranked Missouri Tigers, 76-70.
3. Duke (15-1)- Coach K, and his Duke Blue Devils move up two spots to number 3 after UCLA's loss yesterday. Duke blew up the 23rd ranked Clemson Tigers yesterday, led by DeMarcus Nelson's 24 points, missing just 3 shots from the floor. By the end of the regular season, this Duke team could be number 1.
4. Georgetown (14-2)- G'Town Hoyas Senior Center, Roy Hibbert, averaging 13.1 PPG this season, put up 21 against Notre Dame yesterday, leading the Hoyas to an 84-65 victory. Giving the Hoyas a 4-1 record in the Big East.
5. North Carolina (16-1)- The loss was devastating, especially to the fans, but it won't be enough to knock them out of the top 5 (unlike UCLA's loss). UNC still has the NCAA's best Foward, and possibly the best all-around player in Tyler Hansbrough. Hansbrough average 21.3 PPG, and 10.2 RPG, which I believe is enough ti lead UNC to a number 1 seed in the NCAA March Madness tournament with a 3-4 loss season.
