Sylvania 300 Preview September 9, 2008 - Jimmie Johnson heads into the Chase for the Sprint Cup on a roll, but he’ll have some ground to make up over the next 10 events if he wants to claim another series trophy. Johnson picked up the win the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond on Sunday afternoon, crossing the finish line first for the fourth time this season. Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, David Reutimann, and Kurt Busch rounded out the day’s Top 10. Clint Bowyer ended up back in 12th place in the Chevy Rock & Roll 400, but that was good enough to clinch him a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Kasey Kahne and David Ragan, his main competition for the spot, ended up in 19th and 32nd place. Kyle Busch ended up 15th at Richmond, while Carl Edwards was 13th. Still, those two drivers will sit in the top two spots in the standings when The Chase gets started on Sunday afternoon in the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Kyle Busch and Edwards have won eight and six races, respectively, so far this year. The rest of the field for the 2008 Chase: Johnson, Earnhardt Jr., Bowyer, Hamlin, Burton, Stewart, Greg Biffle, Gordon, Harvick, and Matt Kenseth. Kurt Busch picked up the win in the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire back in June, while Bowyer is the defending Sylvania 300 champion. Burton has four career wins on the Loudon track, while Kurt Busch and Gordon each have three. Other drivers with Cup wins at New Hampshire in their careers: Johnson (two), Stewart (two), Ryan Newman (two), Hamlin (one), and Harvick (one). As well, Kyle Busch won the LENOX Industrial Tools 300 back in July 2006. After racing in New Hampshire the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will move on to Dover International Speedway for the Camping World RV 400 presented by AAA. The rest of the 10 Chase races will then be held at Kansas, Talladega, Lowe’s, Martinsville, Atlanta, Texas, Phoenix, and Homestead-Miami.
