The Green Bay Packers have announced their preseason opponents.  The exact dates are as yet undetermined, but the weeks are clear.

Aug. 13-17: vs. Cleveland Browns  The Annual Midwest Shrine Game
Aug. 20-24: vs. Buffalo Bills The Annual Bishop’s Charities Game
Aug. 27-31: at Arizona Cardinals
Sept. 3-4: at Tennessee Titans

Some interesting tidbits about this slate of games:

  • The Browns game features the Cleveland coaching debut of Eric Mangini.  You may remember Mangini as the coach who named his third son Zack Brett Mangini.  The use of the name Brett is after 2008 Jets QB (former Packer) Brett Favre.
  • This marks the eighth straight time Green Bay has met the Titans in the pre-season.  Since Jeff Fisher tends to play his starters longer than the Packers, the Titans hold a 5-2 record over the last seven seasons.
  • The preseason features two teams, Cleveland and Arizona, that Green Bay will play in the regular season.  This offers an opportunity to see what those teams offer, especially the Arizona game which is the third preseason game.  Traditionally, the third game of the pre-season features the most extensive use of the opening day starters.
  • The scheduling wizards of the NFL have planned it so the Packers will travel to Arizona twice in 2009.  During the preseason and again at some point during the regular season.
