John Buzhardt who spent most of his time in the majors pitching for the Chicago Cubs and later the Chicago White Sox has died at 71 in Prosperity, S.C. He had been ill for several years after a stroke.

Buzhardt pitched for the Chicago Cubs in 1958 and 1959 compiling a 7-5 combined record in those two seasons. In 1960 and 1961 he pitched for the Phillies with a combined 11-29 record. In 1962 he was traded to the White Sox and pitched for the White Sox until he was bought by the Orioles on August 21, 1967. He posted a 49-52 record while with the White Sox. He was 0-1 with the White Sox in 1967 and then bought by the Astros on September 25, 1967 and where he was 4-4 in 1968 and he played his last game in the major leagues with the Astros on September 29, 1998.

His best seasons were with the White Sox were from 1963-1965 when he was 32-20 over those three seasons. He retired with a 71-96 record and a respectable 3.66 ERA.

On July 28, 1961 he was the winning pitcher in the last game the Phillies won before starting their 23 game losing streak and the Phillies wouldn't win again till Buzhardt won again on August 20th, 1961.
