Week 7 Start/Sit Mailbag

This week we answer questions regarding Greg Olsen, Owen Daniels, Dwayne Bowe, Calvin Johnson, Jason Hanson, Kris Brown, Eli Manning, Jay Cutler, Brian Griese, and more.
Well, I’m up to three people who e-mail me questions on a repeated basis. I appear to be adding one new question-asker per week, which means I may be overwhelmed by the end of the season. Keep the questions coming everyone, as my advice would have likely meant a victory for you last week. On to an assortment of mailbag questions:
Loyal reader and now-famous Justin, from “Thursdays with Justin” asks: Week 7: Who do I start for this week?
Giants D v Seahawks D v Titans. D v Texans D
Thanks as always for your loyalty, Justin, as you have a permanent place in the Start/Sit mailbag. For those of you reading, you too could become Justin by asking a question, except not quite as cool. Justin is a trend-setter.
Now for your questions:
I like, in order, the Giants, the Seahawks, Houston, and Tennessee. The Giants are my first pick because the 49ers have been terrible on offense this year, and the Giants pass rush (ranked #1 in sacks) should wreak havoc on a San Francisco o-line that has given up the third most sacks in the league—and they’ve even had a bye already. Pressure leads to mistakes and turnovers, regardless of whether Alex Smith, the human pinata, comes back or not. I like the Seahawks second because of their matchup with the terrible Rams, although I get a feeling this game will be fairly close and the Rams offense will have its best game of the season. Can’t explain it, but I just get a sense. For the last two—Houston and Tennessee—they play each other and Tennessee is more prone to mistakes, especially with the potential for Kerry Collins, the human interception, to be behind center.
G Olsen v O Daniels
Between Olsen and Daniels, I like Olsen this week. Olsen has great hands, an ability lacking in all other Bears receivers. Griese will throw a lot and target Olsen often.
D Bowe v C Johnson
I am guessing that the Johnson you speak of is Calvin Johnson, since there would be no debate if it were Chad. Right off the bat, I feel like they will end up with similar numbers, but I will go with Johnson because I expect the Chiefs to run the ball on the sieve that is the Raiders run D. Detroit is also at home, coming off a bye, and all they know how to do is throw the damn ball. Go with Johnson.
J Hanson v K Brown
I love kicker questions! I may be the world’s kicker specialist, as you would know if you read my column. Just last week, Golden Boy asked me which kicker to pick up while Hanson was on a bye; I told him to go with Dawson, who got 12 points, and he opted for Shane Graham, who got him 8 points. I am brilliant. With that said, I think both players will have decent games and finish within a point or two of each other. I’m going with Hanson on a hunch.
E Manning v J Cutler
Jay Cutler is going up against the Steelers defense coming off a bye. That is all I need to say, but I will go further by saying that the Steelers will run the ball down the Broncos’ throat at mile high, grinding out the clock with a comfortable victory. This will leave Cutler with limited time with which to work against the best defense in the league. The pick is Manning.
Would you trade Galloway and Marshall for Edwards? for Owens? for Smith?
I would make all three of those trades. Every-week starter WRs are in short demand and are an asset to any fantasy squad.
On to Corey, loyal reader #2…
Hey... What do ya know. Me again. As you know my backup QB is Pennington. I don’t have any room on my bench so if I pick up another QB I’ll have to drop him. Would you suggest picking up clemens? If not, these are the top 10: J. Harrington B. Griese K. Warner C. Lemon J. McCown K. Holcomb K. Boller D. Carr V. Testaverde B. Croyle Thanks, Corey
I have two trustworthy readers now, who are both famous and terrific people. They have seen my work, most noteworthy last week’s 19-6-1 record at Start/Sit, and will never go to another source for fantasy news and information. I made that last part up.
Corey, I would nab Griese. He has put up great numbers and his team does not have a running game, which will result in many games with high pass attempts. Even more beneficial, other than his Pillsbury Dough Boy-soft schedule, is that the Bears D is letting up a lot of points, which leads to some shootouts (2 in the last 2 weeks). While I wouldn’t start Griese over Eli this week, I would pick him up and utilize his matchups down the stretch. Keep an eye on Warner, too, because if he gets healthy again, his schedule might be even softer than Griese’s.
My friend Matt asks: Shimmering T,
I've always wondered if fantasy football bloggers do really well in their own fantasy leagues - how are your performing this year? Your #1 Fan.
Matt is trying to be funny and mock me. Thankfully, I control this mailbag and while the question was asked last week when my record was 13-12, I went 4-1 last week and am now 17-13. Not bad since Brees, Steven Jackson, Lee Evans, and the Miami Dolphins ruined a few of my leagues. Besides, I am admittedly much better at analyzing matchups than drafting, especially in fantasy football where each season is a different beast. In the league I am in with Matt, my team has been terrible as a result of Reggie Bush and MoJo, but somehow I am only one game out of first place, close on his tail. He also cried last time I talked to him because he was so worried. That’s right, cried. My claim to elite status as a fantasy analyzer this year is owning Ronnie Brown, Joseph Addai, and Adrian Peterson in my keeper league—my most important—in which I am 5-1.
That’s it for the mailbag, Start/Sit will be out tomorrow morning.
Best of luck on SunMondays,
