USC/UCLA Preview Week 11

9) USC versus (21) Oregon

Both teams are playing much better after struggling early this year. Two weeks ago, the Trojans stumbled and lost to unranked Oregon State. The same happened to Oregon three weeks ago as they lost to Washington State after getting demoralized by Cal. Now both teams are coming off solid victories, USC over Stanford and Oregon over Washington. Louisville's loss to Rutgers now opens the door for a one-loss team to make it into the BCS title game. USC could be that team if they win out. Voters may be impressed with possible victories over ranked opponants, Oregon, Cal, and Notre Dame.

However, the Trojans must focus on the present. With six tough games ahead, USC must take it one game at a time. The Trojans should be able to attack Oregon through the air, as both Cal and Washington State had success with the passing game in the Ducks' only two losses. Look for the Trojans to throw many short passes and execute on long drives to keep Oregon's offense off the field.

Prediction: USC 35 Oregon 21

UCLA versus Oregon State

Its the battle of two teams headed in the opposite direction. Oregon State is the hottest team in the Pac 10 after victories over top ranked USC and Washington State. The Beavers have won four in a row, while UCLA has lost four in a row.

The Bruins are 4-5 and must win two out of their last three games to become bowl elgible. However, the Bruins have lost their last four games with their last victory occuring on October 7th.

On the bright side, the Bruins have played pretty well on both sides of the ball. They have played strong defense consistantly despite the losses. Their offense is finally starting to click with over 500 yards of total offense against Cal. Patrick Cowan threw for over 300 yards against the Bears. However, turnovers are killing the Bruins. If they can not turn the ball over, then the Bruins have a solid shot at a bowl game.

Oregon State is simply a better football team at this point.

Who does UCLA have left? Do you think they will make a bowl game? It seems they're better than they've been playing this year. What's their deal?

UCLA will play Oregon State, Arizona State, and USC. They can make it to a bowl game. If they can somehow pull out a win against OSU, I think they can beat ASU. So they could be 6-6 at best. However, the Bruins have being playing pretty well, better than their record indicates. Their deal is that the only have two starters on offense and deffense that are seinors. A very young football team.

Yah, we lost a ton of talent on offense (Olson, Mercedes Lewis, Maurice Drew, et al) and our starting QB also went down with a knee injury. This has led to an offense that has really struggled. The defense has shown flashes of being good, but they've been succeptible to the big play. As much as I realize USC is a better team (and they finally seem to be rolling now) UCLA does have a shot at the upset. They play up to the competition (see the ND game), and plus it's a rivlary game, so you can never be 100% certain in these things.
