The Early Mock (2/21/07)

Could a change at the top affect everything?

I made an adjustment to the the first pick in the draft and, thus, many other picks changed as well. The ripple when you drop a pebble in a pool, I suppose.

Too much metaphor in that sentence. Let's get to the draft.

Could the Raiders selection of Brady Quinn change the entire fate of the draft?
Could the Raiders selection of Brady Quinn change the entire fate of the draft?

1 Oakland: Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame: Yes, I finally changed this pick. JaMarcus Russell’s mobility issues could cause the Raiders to go with Quinn, a leader on and off the field.

2 Detroit: Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin: The Lions need help everywhere on their team, and Thomas is the best player available.

3 Cleveland: Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma: Romeo Crennel needs to win now to keep his job, and a Droughns-Peterson running threat gives him the best chance of doing that.

4 Tampa Bay: JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU: The Bucs find it hard to pass on Calvin Johnson, but are hopeful that Russell can lead the way for their offense.

5 Arizona: Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas: Anderson will bring a great edge pass rush to the Cardinals’ defensive line.

6 Washington: Alan Branch, DT, Michigan: Branch gives a tough two-gap presence to the middle of the Redskins’ line.

Could Calvin Johnson really fall all the way to the Minnesota Vikings?
Could Calvin Johnson really fall all the way to the Minnesota Vikings?

7 Minnesota: Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech: The Vikings front office marvels as they get the player they feel is the best player in the draft.

8 Houston: Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville: Okoye is a young, powerful defensive lineman who, with Mario Williams, should bring strength to the Texans defensive line.

9 Miami: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson: Adams would be groomed to play in the hybrid DE-OLB role that Jason Taylor currently fills.

10 Atlanta: Reggie Nelson, FS, Florida: The Falcons hope that Nelson’s coverage strengths will give them a huge benefit in their secondary.

11 San Francisco: Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio State: Ginn will give the 49ers a pass-catching presence on the offense and a fantastic kick returner on special teams.

Could Leon Hall replace Nate Clements in the Bills secondary?
Could Leon Hall replace Nate Clements in the Bills secondary?

12 Buffalo: Leon Hall, CB, Michigan: Nate Clements is on his way out and Hall should be an adequate replacement for the Bills.

13 St. Louis: Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC: Jarrett gives the Rams a slot presence if Kevin Curtis leaves and a future #1 receiver when Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt are gone.

14 Carolina: Patrick Willis, MLB, Ole Miss: Willis is the best linebacker available and the Panthers could use the help.

15 Pittsburgh: Lawrence Timmons, OLB, Florida State: As the Steelers look for 4-3 prospects for the first time in two decades, Timmons is the best prospect available.

16 Green Bay: Marshawn Lynch, RB, California: Holding steady with Lynch.

17 Jacksonville: Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina: The Jaguars draft yet another wide receiver in the first round, this time a deep threat with good speed and pretty good hands.

Could the Bengals draft Adam Carriker in spite of franchising Justin Smith?
Could the Bengals draft Adam Carriker in spite of franchising Justin Smith?

18 Cincinnati: Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska: Carriker is a huge defensive end with massive strength who would be a great pass rusher for the Bengals if they trade Smith away.

19 Tennessee: Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh: With no good wide receivers available, the Titans look to improve their defensive backfield.

20 New York Giants: Jarvis Moss, OLB, Florida: Moss remind me a lot of LaVar Arrington (when he was good), and the Giants could use another linebacker in that mold.

21 Denver: Michael Bush, RB, Louisville: Denver is looking for a runningback and Bush could be a good balance for Tatum Bell.

22 Dallas: Justin Blalock, OG, Texas: Blalock is a road grader lineman who will fill a great hole on the Cowboys offensive line.

23 Kansas City: Levi Brown, OT, Penn State: The Chiefs are looking for youth on the offensive line and Brown should not have fallen this far.

Will Laron Landry fall all the way to the Patriots?
Will Laron Landry fall all the way to the Patriots?

24 New England: Laron Landry, S, LSU: Another falling prospect, the Patriots can’t believed that they got a great prospect for either safety position in Laron Landry.

25 New York Jets: Anthony Spencer, OLB, Purdue: Spencer is a strong pass rusher who could be the next “elephant” for the Jets defense.

26 Philadelphia: Michael Griffin, SS, Texas: With Michael Lewis expected to leave in free agency, the Eagles replace him with the durable safety Griffin.

27 New Orleans: Daymeion Hughes, CB, California: Hughes is a rising prospect with good coverage skills who should be a good cornerback for the Saints.

28 New England: Paul Pozluszny, ILB, Penn State: If he gains a few pounds, Pozluszny should be a great presence in the middle for the Patriots.

29 Baltimore: Brandon Meriweather, FS, Miami: Meriweather would be the “other” Miami safety in the Ravens secondary, but he should complement Ed Reed nicely.

Would Meriweather be the "other" Miami safety in Baltimore, or would he step out of Ed Reed's shadow and become one of the best safeties ever?
Would Meriweather be the "other" Miami safety in Baltimore, or would he step out of Ed Reed's shadow and become one of the best safeties ever?

30 San Diego: Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas: With no WRs that the Chargers like left on the board, they look to their secondary, adding Houston as a hopeful future #1 corner.

31 Chicago: Quentin Moses, DE, Georgia: As it looks like the Bears will indeed be hanging onto Lance Briggs, they look to add strength to another area of their defense.

32 Indianapolis: Quinn Pitcock, DT, Ohio State: The Colts finish off the first round with this talented defensive tackle out of Ohio State.

Big Risers: Patrick Willis (+10), Brady Quinn (+7), Amobi Okoye (+6), Dwayne Jarrett (+6),

Big Fallers: Laron Landry (-11), Levi Brown (-8), Daymeion Hughes (-6), Brandon Meriweather (-5), Calvin Johnson (-3)

On The Board: Michael Bush (+16), Chris Houston (+13), Quinn Pitcock (+1)

Off The Board: Dwayne Bowe, Charles Johnson, Marcus McCauley

Bears are letting go there top 2 backup DTs. So I can see them going in that direction rather then DE.

Russell is about as mobile as Young, which can work to a certain extent in the pros. I'm not against the Brady Quinn selection at #1, but I feel you are doing it for the wrong reasons.

Micheal Bush to Denver? You realize that they have Mike Bell who is a plenty capable RB

I think the Jets would take an ILB before they took an OLB. So Pozluszny makes more sense. The guy they really want/need I think is Carriker.

More of a broader question here. What has transpired since the last mock draft you did that would warrant all these moves and jumps in the players? Has anyone worked out? Has anyone played a game? Why the changes in draft places when nothing has changed in real life? Paul Putz is not a first rounder and will not be drafted there

I changed up the order, or simply the selections, for some of the draftees because this article would be extremely boring if no changes were made.

As for player position changes (i.e. Chris Houston overtaking Marcus McCauley at cornerback), I continue to research the players in the mocks that I write. Some things that I learn about some players causes me to rank them higher than the general consensus (i.e. Anthony Spencer, Reggie Nelson, Quentin Moses, Paul Pozluszny). Other things cause me to rank some players lower than the general consensus (i.e. Gaines Adams, Dwayne Jarrett, Marcus McCauley, Michael Griffin). Though I do base my original thoughts on where many other mock drafters are placing players in the ranks, when I find out something negative or positive about a player, I move them up or down my draft board accordingly.

As for Putz, I think he would be a great fit with the right team based on college production. I don't think a merely good senior year makes him a worse prospect than he was last year.

calvin johnson is the top player on nearly every team's board. i just can't see him dropping to seven. if nothing else, someone would trade up to take him before then. as a tampa fan, i am really hoping we take him. i think taking a qb in the first round would fail to solve our problems on offense.

also, no way denver takes a rb in the first round, esp. not michael bush, who will be lucky to be a round two pick. i think they may take revis if he slips that far, or perhaps a safety or wr if he doesn't.

also, doesn't cincy run a 4-3? i think carriker will got to a 3-4 team. he's too big to be a rush end in a 4-3, but not big enough to move inside.
