Well, this should be weird.
I changed up my draft board a lot this week, this time with players like Anthony Spencer and Adam Carriker shooting up the draft and others, like Quinn Pitcock and Zach Miller, falling out of grace. Hope you enjoy this edition of the Early Mock.
1 Oakland: JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU: Russell is still the best and most likely pick for Oakland, who has already begun talking with Russell and his agent.
2 Detroit: Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin: Thomas is a premier left tackle who should help anchor the Lions’ line for years to come.
3 Cleveland: Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma: Stock is building up again around Peterson, who should be a great pickup for the Browns.
4 Tampa Bay: Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech: The Buccaneers still need a WR, and Johnson is the best way to meet that need.
5 Arizona: Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas: A great pass rusher and an excellent presence on the Cardinals’ defensive line.
6 Washington: Alan Branch, DT, Michigan: With no real presence on the inside, Washington drafts the speedy, two-technique Branch for the defensive tackle position.
7 Minnesota: Leon Hall, CB, Michigan: The Vikings look to Hall to give new life to their defensive backfield.
8 Houston: Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame: There are whispers that David Carr’s reign could be over in Houston, and Quinn would be a good candidate to take the reins.
9 Miami: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson: Adams would be a great fit at Jason Taylor’s DE/OLB tweener position for the Dolphins defense.
10 Atlanta: Reggie Nelson, FS, Florida: Laron Landry is a good prospect, but Nelson just played better this year.
11 San Francisco: Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio State: If he doesn’t work out as a wide receiver, at least he can return kicks.
12 Buffalo: Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska: The Bills like Carriker’s combination of size and speed, continuing their string of unorthodox picks in the first round.
13 St. Louis: Laron Landry, SS, LSU: Quite frankly, this couldn’t have worked out better for the Rams.
14 Carolina: Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville: With rumors of Kris Jenkins’ departure, the Panthers look to the awesomely named prospect out of Louisville for help.
15 Pittsburgh: Levi Brown, OT, Penn State: Brown is the best offensive lineman available and the Steelers need offensive linemen.
16 Green Bay: Marshawn Lynch, RB, California: This pick will keep on sticking.
17 Jacksonville: Lawrence Timmons, OLB, Florida State: The Jaguars don’t have a quality linebacker at either outside position. Timmons is the best available that would fit their system.
18 Cincinnati: Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia: Johnson surpasses his teammate Quentin Moses for a tenure with the Bengals, who could trade away Justin Smith now that he has received the franchise tag.
19 Tennessee: Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC: Jarrett is a good match for the Titans, who could use an upgrade at the receiver position.
20 New York Giants: Jarvis Moss, OLB, Florida: With Lavar Arrington out of the picture, the Giants draft Moss, a very similar player to Arrington physically.
21 Denver: Daymeion Hughes, CB, California: Hughes should shoot up draft boards if he has as great a combine as I expect
22 Dallas: Justin Blalock, OG, Texas: Blalock joins Ross as the second consecutive Longhorn selected with the Cowboys, who want to use his talents at the guard position.
23 Kansas City: Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina: Every time I project this pick, I die a little inside.
24 New England (from Seattle): Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh: The Patriots like Revis’ hard-hitting style and tough attitude towards the game.
25 New York Jets: Anthony Spencer, OLB, Purdue: Spencer’s size and speed should bode well for him with the Jets.
26 Philadelphia: Brandon Meriweather, S, Miami: Though he may prove to be a bit of a headache, Meriweather nonetheless played well during Senior Bowl week.
27 New Orleans: Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno State: This developmental prospect is the type of player that the Saints wanted all along.
28 New England: Patrick Willis, ILB, Ole Miss: Willis takes a tumble to the Patriots, who are happy to snatch him up with the 28th pick in the draft.
29 Baltimore: Michael Griffin, S, Texas: Griffin could fill a hole at FS that has been so gaping, the Ravens needed to bring in Gerome Sapp.
30 San Diego: Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU: Bowe is speedy, and the Chargers could use a deep threat.
31 Chicago: Paul Pozluszny, OLB, Penn State: If Briggs leaves, the Bears will look to bring in a replacement through the draft.
32 Indianapolis: Quentin Moses, DE, Georgia: There is no way that the Colts hang onto Dwight Freeney, and Moses could someday be an adequate replacement.
