The 2007 ArmchairGM Fifty

May 8, 2007

Tonight, somewhere in Manhattan, there's a big party going on.

Well, one specific party -- the Time 100 party.

The Time 100 honors one-hundred people, picked by Time Magazine, who are among (if not the) the most influential people on Earth. You can click the link above to see their list -- and you'll note that only four people in the sports world who make the list: Tony Dungy, for being the first coach African-American to win a Super Bowl; Chien-Ming Wang, as a representative for the Asians who are breaking Major League Baseball's "culture barrier" (whatever that is -- ask Time); Thierry Henry, for chipping away at soccer's racial barriers; and Roger Federer, for reasons obvious.

The four people above may be deserving, given Time's criteria, but I wonder -- who would make the list of the 50 most influential people in the world of sports? So, I asked the ArmchairGM community to help put together a list. Introducing...

The ArmchairGM Fifty

The ArmchairGM Fifty is the annual (hopefully) list of the 50 most influential people in the world of sports over the past year or so. They're on this list either for their impact on the sports world, or for using their sports-related fame to impact the world at large. Their impact need not be positive or well-known -- just real. And because we're focused on the last 12-15 months, you'll not see guys like Jesse Owens or Jackie Robinson on this list. Because we're not honoring the best players, Dirk Nowitzki and Albert Pujols didn't make it. And as specific impact matters over general, simply being commissioner isn't enough. (Sorry, Bud.)

I've broken up the list into five pages of ten people each, just to make it easier to read. The order of the people does not matter -- number one is no more or less influential than number 50.

Let's begin:
