Sunday Observations, Part I (11/18/07)

Just two weeks ago, the Patriots and Colts were facing off in the greatest regular season game ever, according to ESPN. Now, it seems that if the Colts have fallen off the face of the earth following the loss to their hated rivals. Last week against the San Diego Chargers, all pro Peyton Manning (pictured) threw a career high six interceptions in the loss. What made the defeat even more aggravating for Colts fans was that future hall of fame kicker Adam Vineteri missed a sure 23 yard field goal that would have won the game.

While they did beat the Kansas City Chiefs today 13-10, their performance was not typical. The offense struggled as the team scored just one touchdown and totaled a mer 216 net yards. Vinatari, their top notch, kicker also missed two field goals. Whatever happened to the dominating Colts? Third down conversions were also a problem as Manning and company were a miserable four out of fifteen. Whatever happened to those dominating Colts?

-One of the indicators in which I use to evaluate young football teams is their ability to win on the road. Today, the Cleveland Browns proved with their 33-30 victory against the Baltimore Ravens that they are indeed serious playoff contenders in the AFC. What is most impressive is about the Browns is their young offensive stars. Quarterback Derek Anderson and wide receiver Braylon Edwards are beginning to look like the league's next great quarterback-receiver combination. As a said last week, as long as the Browns keep improving each week then they will surely be a playoff team.

-Were the Saints a one hit wonder? Don't get me wrong, the Saints were a great story last season but the wheels seem to be falling off the wagon now. Reggie Bush, one of last season's best rookies, is undergoing a major sophomore slump despite an increase in carries. What has been even more depressing is their lack of a solid defense. Last year the defense was at least average but this year it is far worse, as the unit ranks 25th in the league in total defense. Most of all, back to back loses to the Rams and Texans have made the Saints look like the Jim Haslett teams of 2004 and 2005.

-I feel really old after watching that Packers-Panthers game. Brett Favre, 38, and Vinny Testeverde, 43, combined to formed the oldest quarterback duo in NFL history. Age before beauty.

The Colts are riddled with injuries involving many of their best players. That should warrant mentioning.

Unfortunately Marvin Harrison may not be the same guy that we remember when he comes back from injury.

Dwight Feeney's career has to be a concern as well.
