Stock Up:
Andre Agassi: What more can I say that hasn't been said already? Agassi officially called it a career after his loss to Benjamin Becker. Of course, he made sure to have one more unforgettable match against Baghdatis. Like everyone else, I was on the verge of tears when Agassi took his final bow on Sunday. For 21 years, Agassi brought passion, heart and brilliance to the sport of tennis. His place in history has been carved out. So on behalf of Agassi fans everywhere as well as this website, Thank you, Andre and enjoy retirement!
Samuel Peter- If the heavyweight division in boxing is to have any sort of resurgence, Sam Peter will most likely be the man leading the charge. His 12-round victory over James Toney gives him a shot at the WBC Heavyweight title. Despite weighing in at 257 pounds, Peter was more active in the later rounds in this fight as opposed to the fight against Klitschko. Moreover, it gives the heavyweight division a glimmer of hope. Let's face facts, Sam Peter's wicked right hand and KO power were the only reasons I watched the fight on Saturday. Would anybody have taken this seriously if this were Toney vs Ruiz?
Montana State Bulldogs- Montana State delivered the ultimate embarassment to the Colorado Buffaloes with a 19-10 road victory. It was the first victory for the Big Sky Conference over a 1-A school since 2003. They also earned a whopping $275,000 for the upset. Like Chris Berman would say, this is why they play the games.
Stock Down:
Carl Pavano: It's time for the Yanks to cut ties with Pavano. Injuries have become so prevalent for Pavano that the Yankees teammates have deemed it business as usual. Then to top it off, Pavano revealed that his already injured ribs occurred as a result of a car accident!!! I'm sure this has to violate some sort of stipulation in the contract. The bottom line is this: There's no need for Pavano. He's become irrevalent. CUT HIM LOOSE!!
THE U.S Basketball Team: With all the serious changes in players and coaches as well as a change in philosophy, the U.S team had only one goal in mind: A gold medal. Greece spoiled the U.S's run with a 101-95 victory. The U.S would claim the bronze with a double-digit victory over Argentina. But now the U.S will have to go into the qualifying tournament in 2007 that they wished to avoid. Much has been done to right the ship for U.S Basketball, but there's more work to be done. Perhaps Kobe and Shaq can come out of their crevices and play so that a gold medal can be assured.
James Toney - If there were a video for unsportsmanlike conduct, Toney would be front and center. It's sad that athletes such as Toney with such talent would conduct themselves like 1st graders. Toney then proceeded to give an unintelligible interview that honestly required subtitles for clarification. One could debate the winner and loser of the Toney/Peter match forever, but there is no debate over who the loser is outside of the ring.
