Stock Up:
Fransisco Liriano- This 22-year old pitcher{and now ALL-star} has been one of the main sparks behind the current winning streak of the Twins. He's 9-1 with an ERA under 2.00 and once again ruled the mound with an 8-inning 12 K performance against the Brew Crew. Imagine a one-two combo with him and Johan Santana. The ironic thing is that despite this winning streak the Twins have made no ground on the White Sox and Tigers. With Liriano, this team shows why there should be 16 teams in the MLB playoffs.
Zinadine Zidane/Thierry Henry- Brazil has considered by mant to be the flagship franchise for World Cup Soccer. Therefore, how many say that they can have their number? Zidane can. With his assist off of a corner kick that resulted in a goal by Thierry Henry. Brazil was sent packing by France just like 1998. Zidane set the pace of the match and led with an iron fist. This was supposed to have been Zidane's last soccer match ever if he had lost. Looks like Zidane wasn't quite ready to go into the twilight yet. Honestly, he looks good enough to give it another go in 2010. As for Henry, I'm personally happy that he scored the goal because of the racial slurs he endured before the match against Spain. Racism makes me sick. It does not need to exist anywhere let alone an event like the World Cup that brings the world together.
Jerry West- This Grizzlies GM shows why he is one of the best executives in the NBA again this week. His trade of Shane Battier to get a pure scorer in the #8 pick Rudy Gay from Connecticut was pure genius. The Grizzlies had a lot of shooters but not a lot of consistent scoring. Gay will fill that void. Jerry West does it again.
New Jersey Nets- The Nets filled their two voids at #22 and #23 with the signing of Marcus Williams and Josh Boone. Marcus Williams is the Nets point guard for the future and he'll have an awesome tutor in Jason Kidd especially during practice. Josh Boone fills a void in being a low-post player who can grab rebounds and who already brings in more offensive skills than Jason Collins will ever have. Boone has a national title under his belt, so he'll bring in a winning attitude. Two great picks by Rod Thorn, another good executive.
Shenay Perry- Congratulations to Shenay Perry for being the only tennis player from the US of A to make it to the second week of Wimbledon.
Stock Down:
Wayne Rooney/England- I have heard a lot of hype from the press and commentators about Wayne Rooney before and during this World Cup and the lasting impression I'll have of him is how his nasty play got him a red card and England's ticket out of the World Cup. Rooney's kick in the groin was the equivalent to Marcus Vick's dirty play last season in college football. Couple that with Beckham's substitution and England had neither Rooney nor Beckham while taking penalty kicks. And I could tell by the looks on some of the English player's faces before taking their shots during PK that they were feeling the void as well.
The Americans at Wimbledon- What have we done overseas in the past couple weeks? First the U.S soccer team gets eliminated in the 1st round of the World Cup. Now Venus, Roddick, Blake, Agassi{Big Up to Agassi} and the rest of the gang get sent home early before the real action even began at Wimbledon. It's gotten so bad that while all of the other 31 teams identified their soccer team name in their individual World Cup buses, the U.S was the only team not to identify themselves on theirs.
trojanfan25- For even thinking of bringing politics on this distinguished website. I go through enough politics everyday on my job. Leave it out of Armchairgm.com!!
Denver Nuggets- After locking up Carmelo Anthony by matching the contract given to Lebron James 5 years-80 million dollars. The Nuggets apparently drank the wrong type of Kool-Aid and signed Nene to a 6 year 60 million dollar deal!!!! This was despite the fact that he played only a few minutes on opening night this season before blowing out his knee and missing 27 games the year before that. Not to mention that he cannot return to action for another two months!! The Nuggets must really, really, not want Kenyon Martin back next season!! Nene averaged 10.7 ppg and 6.2 rpg for his career so far. Couple that with the fact Nene got married in Brazil over the weekend as well. Not that Nene dosen't have upside at 23 years of age, but he has got to stay healthy to live up to it. And he has 60 million more reasons to do so. Personally, I see a remake of the Antonio Mcdyess/Allan Houston-NY Knicks debacle.
