Third Test Match – England v Sri Lanka – Day 1 (Trent Bridge, Nottingham)

Sri Lanka changed their team at the last moment (making the earlier selected teams slightly wrong).

Sri Lanka captain, Mahela Jayawardene, won the toss, and elected to bat. This was understandable, because the pitch was hard, and fast. It was a beautiful sunny day, and looked to be a belter to bat on.

However, Hoggard and Lewis immediately swung the new ball, causing the Sri Lankan's problems. Lewis took a wicket on his Test debut, on just his fourth ball, as Vandort was bowled.

However, as the swing of the new ball passed, Tharanga and Sangakkara played well to get Sri Lanka to 84/1.

A poor umpiring decision gave England the wicket of Sangakkara. From there, Sri Lanka collapsed to 86/4 at lunch.

The collapse continued after lunch, as Sri Lanka were reduced to 139/8. This gave England the significant advantage on a pitch that no longer has help for the bowlers.

But bowler Chaminda Vaas and then Muttiah Muralitharan helped restore some pride for Sri Lanka as they moved on to score 231 and restore some pride.

England started decently, but Vaas took the wicket of Strauss, and Trescothick was run out by the narrowest of margins. England limped to 53/2 at close of play.
