I always liked Tug McGraw. His son Tim McGraw had Tug's photo on his wall before he even knew he was his daddy.
I was watching when Tug McGraw ended the World Series in 1980. I had seen the Royals that year in Arlington,Texas playing the Rangers and remember Clint Hurdle hitting a homer for the Royals.
Fantastic videos!! I used to watch Home Run Derby years ago. It is a little different from the Home Run Derby we know today. There must not be anyone in the park for these shows except the camera crew...and the $2,000 prize is a joke today. Can you see Barry Bonds trying to win $2,000...he would laugh at them if they told him he would have a chance to win $2,000. A-Rod makes that much in one swing.
I think you will like the book but don't buy it if you don't have time to read it since I know that can be nervewracking to have a great book to read and no time to read it. I remember the HBO series..think it was called When They Played the Game...then my daughter sold them in a garage sale without my knowledge.
Pete Gray was not much of a hitter but just the fact that he played in the outfield impresses me considering all he had to do just to throw the ball after catching it. I saw Ted Williams in person in Kansas City when the Red Sox played the A's. It is so much fun reliving the past while researching. Manny had just sent me a message about doing a Meet the Users but he may not mind if you do it instead. If you want to read about the past there is a book called When They Played the Game that tells in the player's own words what it was like to play baseball from 1947-1964. I bought it on ebay or amazon for almost nothing but it is a 600 page book and think I got it for about $3 or $4 before shipping. It was written by Danny Peary. You probably can go to amazon.com and read the reviews about it.
I was sad to hear that Eddie Gaedel was murdered and I think the only baseball player to show up at the funeral was the pitcher who pitched to him that day named Bob Cain of the Tigers.
It is a great improvement on the cutoff face photo that was on there before. Thanks again for the help.!!!
They just called back and said I don't need to be there till 11AM in the morning so may try to make a short post.
I try to do the Notebook five days a week. I work 24 hours combined on Saturday and Sunday so don't have time to write anything at all since I work 3 eight hour shifts in two days. I don't think Romi has ever added pictures. He has edited my page a lot though. The pictures add a lot to the page.
Of the three players you mentioned only Ron LeFlore got much publicity and that was mostly because of him being an ex convict. It was great seeing him do so well after serving prison time.
Have only been to Millville once in 1957 to see my grandma. Mack did manage a lot of Hall of Famers.
That Luzinski/Ripken stat is amazing. I'd never have believed it. Although I think the stolen base was more prominent in the 70s than it was in the 80s and forward. After all, nobody remembers Omar Moreno, Frank Tavares or Ron LeFlore, but they were always at the top of the stolen base lists for the 70s.
Don't know New Jersey that well but my dad was from Millville, New Jersey and is 93 now. He saw Connie Mack coming out of a church once. Hard to believe he owned the Philadelphia Athletics for 50 years. He pulled some Marlins type fire sales before it wasn't the cool thing to do.
Did you know that Bull Luzinski had one more stolen base than Ripken in his career? Ripken must not have been a speedster.
18-1 season for a reliever was almost as great as Haddix 12 inning game. He must have been brought into a lot of tie games to win 18 games. Closers today usually don't come into a game if his team is behind or in some cases a tie game even. Last year the save leader had 47 saves but only a 1-4 record.
I am almost sure Mattingly was called Donnie Ballgame..you could do a search on it if you wanted. Wikipedia lists Teddy Ballgame as a nickname for Ted Williams. I used to be on AOL and have worked nights almost exclusively since 1981 so asked for the name Niteowl but there were already 48 NiteOwls so I had to be Niteowl049 so AOL added the 049.
Hi Sj...I go out of my way to not get into arguments with the members of ArmchairGM. I still don't mind anyone writing their opinions even if different from mine as long as they aren't rude or condescending. Am looking forward to baseball season as we will have even more to comment about then.
