LOL! Culture Gap! I thought you were making reference to how black folk in the "country" (southern US) speak. Sorry for the confusion
No, the disc failed. :-( So I couldn't get it to work. However, I saved my games on the computer, rather than the disc, so I should be able to play the same game on the disc. Also, the Olympics came and went, so I had limited motivation to get the new disc until after they finished. University stuff to sort out too etc. I should be all sorted now though, and I should have written an article by next weekend.
Thank you Alex! This was driving me mad because I can't help be say things in my head as I read them and (hollow-check) was not translating. The problem is that our public school system doesn't bother to teach kids how to pronounce anything outside of english (american if you choose, I do sometimes). I do call Sea-bass Jan-o-kow-ski much like it's spelled. If I can figure it out on my own I'll always try to say it proper (as a black kid I really can scare old white people =)) but the w before the c before the z, I couldn't see pass it. Thanks again Alex.
Right, to answer your question, with a full explanation.
My grandfather is Ukrainian, hence the name. In Ukraine, it is supposed to be said "Holov-check". Then he came to Britain after the war (he was on his way to the USA but liked it so much here he remained). Over here, it is pronounced "Hollow-check".
One thing that annoys me about Americans is how they tend to pronounce foreign words as if they are their own. Take the NHL for instance. Christobal Huet (Who-et) is pronounced "Hewitt". Sebastien Janikowski (Yannick-ovski) is pronounced as spelt. I suppose generally you'd all call me "Hollow-c-zack". But no, it is "Hollow-check".
Thanks for asking! :)
Alex can you help me pronouce your last name the best I've done is: (Holo-wa-zak)is that even close? I wish I had a recording of you saying it so I'd have it with your midlands accent. (Assuming that's your accent cause it says your from Birmingham and your a Villa fan so I'm putting the ASS in assume.)
