Series Preview: Yankees at Red Sox (4/20 - 4/22)

It begins anew. The New York Yankees make the trip up the coast to Fenway Park to face off against their bitter rivals, the Boston Red Sox. Last season's series did not go well for the Sox as they lost the season series 11-8, including being on the rough end of a devastating 5-game sweep at Fenway at the hands of the Bronx Bombers, a series which was heralded as the second Boston Massacre and really spelled the end of Boston's season for all intents and purposes.

For the first time in a long time, the Red Sox seemed to win the off-season battle, signing Daisuke Matsuzaka, Julio Lugo, and J.D. Drew, while really the only high-profile acquisition by the Yankees was Kei Igawa. They also lost Randy Johnson and Gary Sheffield, and are having rough injury problems, with Hideki Matsui, Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano, and ace Chien-Ming Wang all on the DL. However, you can never take the Yankees lightly, especially with Alex Rodriguez having the start to the season that he's having, leading the majors in homers (9) and RBI (23) entering play on Thursday.

The Yankees seem to have an advantage on offense both overall and how streaky the Boston hitters have been at the plate, but right now the Sox pitching staff is light-years ahead of New York even discounting all the injuries. Let's take a look at the three games they'll be playing this weekend.

Game 1

Andy Pettitte (NYY)
VS.
Curt Schilling (BOS)
Image:AndyPettitteThumb.jpg
Image:CurtSchillingThumb.jpg
(1-0, 1.50)
(2-1, 2.84)

Andy Pettitte has had a nice start to his second stint in the Bronx, going 1-0 in three starts. Oddly enough, the Yankees pitching staff has been in such disarray that he had to appear in relief in an April 8th game against the Baltimore Orioles. Andy had a rough last season with Houston, going 14-13 with a 4.20 ERA. He has struggled against the big boppers in the Red Sox lineup in his career:

    • David Ortiz: .409/.458/.682, 1 HR, 3 RBI
    • Manny Ramirez: .424/.470/.695, 3 HR, 18 RBI
    • J.D. Drew: .375/.444/1.250, 2 HR, 2 RBI

Curt Schilling has rebounded nicely after a rough first start in Kansas City, and has now thrown 14 straight scoreless innings in his last two starts. He has owned A-Rod over the course of his career, holding him to just 6 hits in 31 at-bats and only a .219 OBP. Robinson Cano has had some success against Schilling, going 6-17 with a home run. Schilling's WHIP on the season is a very good 1.05.

Game 2

Jeff Karstens (NYY)
VS.
Josh Beckett
Image:JeffKarstensThumb.jpg
Image:JoshBeckettThumb.jpg
(NR)
(3-0, 1.50)

Young Jeff Karstens makes his first start this season for the Yankees, bringing with him a 2-1 career record with an ERA of 3.80 in 8 games, 6 starts. None of the current Red Sox hitters has ever faced Karstens. He is coming off the DL to make his first start, having landed there with elbow stiffness late in spring training.

Josh Beckett has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball so far, and sports a 3-0 record and a 1.50 ERA to prove it. He has been nearly unhittable at times, with a WHIP of under 1 on the year. He has struck out exactly a batter an inning so far. He did struggle against New York last season, sporting an ugly 9.45 ERA against them, but he seems to be a different pitcher so far this year. He has only given up one home run on the year, a category that he struggled mightily with in his first season in the American League.

Game 3

Chase Wright (NYY)
VS.
Daisuke Matsuzaka (BOS)
Image:ChaseWrightThumb.jpg
Image:DaisukeMatsuzakaThumb.jpg
(1-0, 5.40)
(1-2, 2.70)

Rookie hurler Chase Wright won his first major league start last week against Cleveland, going five innings with a load of run support from that vaunted Yankee offense. I'm a little puzzled as to why he was brought up instead of uber-prospect Philip Hughes, but what do I know? He obviously has never faced the Red Sox before, so this will be his introduction to the rivalry as well as Karstens'.

Daisuke Matsuzaka has been the victim of a serious lack of run support so far. The Red Sox hitters have scored a total of 5 runs in Matsuzaka's three starts, and if they don't start producing for him soon, he could end up being one of the most expensive 15-game losers in history. That aside, Dice-K has pitched magnificently so far, with the notable exception of the fourth inning of Tuesday's start against Toronto, when his control went completely out the window. I'm sure Red Sox fans are happy that he makes his debut against New York at Fenway instead of at hostile Yankee Stadium.

I root from my heart but predictions come from the brain. Yanks won't score 8 runs a game off those three guys, but might give up 8 a game with the three they have pitching.

The Yankees take two of three, Yankee bullpen is much better and deeper than boston. It should be an exciting series, but remember this is only April...

Stop, it will be a great series. Pettite threw 7 innings last outing and has an ERA of 1.5 this year. Wright pitched 5 innings his last outing. Don't forget Matsuzuka is kept on a strict 100 pitch limit. Let's see how he fairs pitching every five days against ML players and see how he holds up in September...

lets see how the Yankees do without Pitching. They have countless pitching injuries that are goingto keep them from playing deep into october. I'm not a BoSox fan, but I think that the Japanese league is better than people make it out to be. There's no depth in the Yankees rotation

NYY's starting pitching is just short of a joke. And outslugging the Red Sox won't be as easy as outslugging the Indians. Boston takes 2 of 3.

NYY starting pitching is a joke?? Come on, are you kidding me? Pettite, Mussina, Wang are a joke? We have a few injuries, but the young guns have done well. The Yankee bullpen is much much better than boston. All that said, none of it matters, cause they actually still have to play the game. Like i said before, it should be an exciting series, but AGAIN it's April...

Mussina and Wang aren't a joke, but they are on the DL. So right now, advantage Boston.

False prophet, where do you get that the Yankee starting rotation isn't deep? that is hilarious, did you hear of Rasner, Karstens, Wright?? Who does boston have? And again, as long as Torre doesn't blow out his bullpen, the Yankees should cruise into October just fine.

Well, no. I haven't heard of them :-p. But I suppose you have heard of Schilling, Beckett, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, Jon Lester's coming back soon...

A team looking to make the playoffs generally has a rotation where there would be only one pitcher like Rasner, Karstens, and Wright in the rotation, if any. The Yankees have three right now. When Mussina and Wang get healthy, the Yankees will be fine, but the Yankees pitching has 3 guys who do not belong in a playoff-caliber rotation. All three of them are way too hittable.

C'mon, Boston has some old pitchers including in their starting rotation: Schilling 40+, Wakefield 40+. I am comfortable having Karstens pitch against anyone.

True, but at least Schilling and Wakefield have proven they can get major league hitters out. Karstens, Wright, and Rasner don't have that track record, and I doubt they ever will.

Two things:

1) I'm a Yankee fan. Big time.

2) Karstens, Wright and Rasner suck. Big time.

Interesting, Karstens sucks? And you base that on what? Saying he doesn't have a track record is one thing, saying he sucks?

The yankees are doomed because they have a poor starting pitching rotation, and a bullpen that will be spent. My Twins were the first team in the AL to 10 wins. Look at their Pitching. Santana's the best pitcher in Baseball right now, Bonser is a solid starter when he can control his fastball. Ortiz is 12th in ERA, 1st in Wins, pretty damn good. Silva is 11th in ERA, not bad for a 4th starter. Ponson is the weak link. Thats 4 solid starters. Beyond that, they have 4 strong long relievers (Reyes, Perkins, Baker, Guerrier), two set up men(Rincon and Neshek), a durable pitcher that can handle abuse (Crain), and a closer who is a bit stressed with a child in his house now, but is stabling out. That's 12 solid pitchers out of 13 on the roster. The yankees don't come close

FP, I agree with your point that the Yankee bullpen will be blown out by September. Torre does not know how to manage a bullpen, never did, never will. I do not however agree that our starting rotation is poor. A little banged up right now, but definitely not poor. We will have Wang, Mussina, Pettitte, Pavano, Igawa...then Karstens/Rasner long relief. I'm sure we can pick up Clemens after the all-star break, maybe bring up Hughes if he's ready. As long as Torre doesn't blow out every arm in the bullpen, I still like our pitching staff.

but pitching is the key now in the AL. Oakland, DET, MIN, ANA, BOS, and CLE all have superior pitching than New York, and that makes me think that no matter how great their amazing Offense is, it won't be enough to get through the playoffs.
