Rice versus Harrison

The Indianapolis Colts receiver, Marvin Harrison, is entering his 12th NFL season this year. While ex-49ers, Raiders, and Seahawks receiver Jerry Rice had a 21 year career. These two receivers are both future hall of famers, and have alot more in common.

Marvin Harrison has played for the colts his entire career, his rookie season was in 1996, and in his 11 seasons in the NFL, only three of those years he did not get over 1,000 receiving yards (his first three seasons), since 1999 Harrison has had over 1,000 receiving yards, and at least 10 TD's. For four straight seasons Harrison had over 100 receptions, including the NFL record 143 in 2002. Not to mention that Marvin also has a super bowl ring, although in SB XLI he only had five receptions for 59 yards and no TD's. And in fourteen career playoff games Marvin has only 60 receptions, for 835 yards, and 2 TD's (an average of 4 rec., 60 yds, and .14 TD's per game) that doesn't help out Manning too much, maybe thats why they were only 7-7 in the postseason in Marvin's career. But. Marvin has a super bowl ring, and that will help him get into the hall of fame.

While Marvin has one super bowl ring, and 1,022 career receptions along with 13,697 receiving yards, and 122 career receiving TD's, ex-NFL receiver, Jerry Rice has 3 super bowl rings, and went to a fourth one with the raiders in 2002, but lost. He also has 1,549 career receptions, with 22,895 receiving yards, and 197 receiving TD's. In the postseason Jerry Rice was clutch, unlike Harrison, Rice had 151 rec., 2,245 yds, and 22 TD's in his 28 game postseason career (an average of 5 rec, 80 yds, and .78 TD's per game) it may not seem that much better than Harrison's postseason career, but he had big games when it really mattered. In his super bowl career he had 33 Rec., 589 yds, and 8 TD's (an average of 8 Rec., 147 yds, and 2 TD's per super bowl) in 4 career super bowl appearances. In three of those four super bowls Rice had 148 Receiving yards or better, including a 215 yard performance in 1988 against the bengals, he had 11 receptions in that game.

Both of these receivers are very similar in size too. Rice was 6'2, 200 pounds. While Harrison is 6'0 181 pounds. They both have tremendous speed. I would love to see Rice and Harrison compete against each other in a competition, and I think that Rice could still probably beat Harrison now, even though he is 44 years old, Harrison's days are limited, though, he is 34, he will be 35 on the twenty fifth of August. Harrison is a 8-time pro bowler, maybe even more to come in the coming years, and Rice was a 13-time pro bowler. Maybe when Harrison retires he will face Rice in the show "Dancing with the stars." Who knows.

Well, anyway I think right now Rice is way better, but I think Harrison is catching up to him quickly. Tell me who you think is better. I am curious to see what other people think.

Harrison is a great player but he isn't even close to Rice. When looking at Rice's career stats no one ever bothers to mention that he had his best season (1878 yards) the year before Warren Sapp blew up his knee by tackling it with his helmet. Without that hit, where would his numbers be now? No other wideout has come all that close to matching that year, even as season reception numbers have gone up and overall receiver numbers have gone up.

No comparison...this is ridiculous...do I even have to point out who is/was the better receiver?

Harrison is 35 years old and has averaged 1245 yds receiving a year. At that pace he would need almost 7 and a half seasons to pass Rice. Rice retired at age 42, and had a combined 1298 yds receiving in his last 3 years. So it is possible but not probable that Harrison will pass Rice.

Don Hutson was the most dominant of his era.

Led the league in receptions 8/11 years, (five years in a row). Rice led the league twice in his entire career.

Rice led the league in receiving yards 6/20 years. Hutson did it 7 years

Hutson led the league in receiving TDs 9/11 years. Rice was 6/20.

Hutson’s 1942 season is considered by some to be the greatest season by a receiver in NFL history. Hutson caught 74 passes for 1,211 yards (16.4 YPC) and 17 TDs – in 11 games! Rice played his entire career with the benefit of a 16-game schedule. He surpassed 17 TDs just once and equaled it one other time. Projected over a 16-game schedule, Hutson would have caught 108 passes for 1,761 yards and 25 TDs in 1942.

In that era, there was no pass interference penalty.

Hutson's stats from 1935-1941 are not impacted by WWII.

Hat tip to Mike Carlson.

The guy basically invented modern receiving. He was league MVP in 1941, 1942.

That is all very well and good, but he has the advantage in that he invented passing routes. That gave him a huge advantage over the opposition. I am not saying that Hutson wasn't a great player, just that he had a huge competitive advantage. He would have been a great player anyway but no defender would have had a chance against the first pass routes they saw, Rice dominated in a league where everyone knew all the tricks and you could only beat people by being better than they were.

Marvin is a great receiver, in fact he is the best in the league right now. But a comparison to possibly the best football player ever is unwarranted. Dont bother comparing them at least until Marvin's career is over. Who knows he might wind up with similar stats so lets give it some time.

My point is that, according to the numbers, Hutson was more dominant than Rice. This is by margin over others of the same position in the same era. I also would like to mention that you say that Rice dominated by being better than the opposition. Isn't thinking (inventing pass routes) a way of being better than the opposition? Why reward physical superiority but not mental?
