Red Sox/Yankees, Mariners/Angels Overrated...Phillies/Mets real race!!

Forget about the 5 plus lead the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels have over there fellow second place teams. The Philadelphia Phillies have just swept the New York Mets and are now a mere 2 games back heading into September. The game today was incredible. The Phillies took a 5 nothing lead into the 4th inning by 3 homeruns from Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell, and Aaron Rowand. The Mets respnded by scoring 5 themselves but in the bottom of the 6th the Phils scored 3 runs with 2 outs.

The game is now 8-5 going into the top of the 8th were Antonio Alfonseca relives J.C. Romero after he got an out and walked a batter. The Mets ended up batting around plus one on their way to scoring 5 runs. It is 10-8 going into the bottom of the 8th when the Mets bring in Billy Wagner for a 2 inning save. He gets Utley out but then serves up another homerun to Pat Burrell (his second of the game) he threw 21 pitches or so but only surrendered one run. It is now 10-9 with Tom Gordon coming in a shutting the door by setting them down in order.

Finally, it is the bottom of the 9th with Jayson Werth leading off. He hits a bloop single in left field, then Carlos Ruiz flies out to deep center, then Werth stole second and third and Iguchi singled to left scoring Werth with 2 strikes. Tadahito Iguchi then steals second so they intentionally walk Jimmy Rollins to bring up Chase. Chase on a two strike count singles to right scoring Iguchi on a close play at the plate. The Phils win 11-10 in another dramatic finish for the 3rd straight game. As I am now watching sportscenter of course they have the Yanks/Sox game to start the show. The Phillies are 2 back of the Mets and yet they think the Yanks/Sox, Mariners/Angels are the biggest races in the league. What bull!

They're all real races until one team has claimed the division/wild card, in my opinion. The one that's the best is the one that involves your favorite team/division (usually).

I love close races too, and think the Phillies have what it takes to win the division AND make the Series (assuming they handle their remaining games against Atlanta and Florida - who seem to ruin every Phils season), and then all the shhhhhing in the world won't change that...

BUT... to answer your question about why the attention is on the AL - the AL races are better because (let's face it) the AL kicks the crap out the NL!

The NL might have the D-Backs, Padres, Cubs, and/or Brewers in the playoffs... WHICH of these teams would be better than .500 in the AL?

Answer - None.

So? That just makes it even better. With over half of the NL teams being in contention (Cards, Cubs, Brewers, Braves, Phils, Braves, Padres, Rockies, Dodgers, Diamondbacks), there is definitely a lot of question and talking about who's going to the playoffs.

Watching the Phils/Mets(/Braves?) division race is definitely exciting to watch. All of the games that they play always seem pretty exciting. I think many people say it's more exciting because ESPN doesn't talk about it as much as the Boston/New York race, which is ridiculous; I think everyone knows this, but I'll say it: They should talk about division races equally.

No, they shouldn't cover the races equally - they are running a business, not a charity.

ESPN has a duty to cover the events that the most people want, it just makes dollars, I mean sense....

There ARE other places to get your sports fix on than ESPN (the Cliff's notes of Sports)

Ever wonder why NESN (New England Sports Network) was created?

The best races are probably in the NL, only because there's so many teams involved

East is braves, phils and mets

West is Padres, D-back and dodgers

and the WC is all of the above...there's just a glut of fatally flawed teams fighting for essentially 3 spots...and you really don't know who will win...

I noticed you skipped the Central Jut with the Cubs, Cards and Brewers... Also, Wagner threw 45 pitches, way more than he is expected to throw in a normal outing, and his control was not there (23 strikes, 22 balls.)

National League has much better pennant races going at this time. Brewers are furthest back of any NL second place team being behind by two and a half games. In AL the Angels are ahead by 5 and a half games while Red Sox are ahead by five games. Tigers are closest second place team in AL yet are still four and a half games behind Indians in AL Central. Mariners have lost 6 in a row at a time when they needed to close ground on the Angels. Yankees are still in striking distance of the Red Sox after their sweep.

I think Arizona will fall off the map, and the NL wildcard will come from the NL East. -Kwass
