NFL Suplemental Draft News/ESPN.com sucks

The NFL Suplemental draft happened today of course ESPN.com doesn't have any information on it. I guess it's not "now" enough. ESPN is slowing morphing into the NY Post of news sources.

So anyway for those who care about some real sports news, both OT Jared Gaither from Maryland and CB Paul Oliver have been selected in the supplemental draft.

(source profootballtalk.com) Gaither was grabbed by the Ravens in round 5 and Oliver by the Chargers in Round 4.

Oliver was considered to be 1/1a CB prospect for the 2008 draft alongside Arizona CB Antoine Cason. Because of poor grades he was not eligible to return to school. Gaither is a gigantic offensive tackle. He would have been a day one pick had he entered the 2008 NFL Draft.

Oilver was rumored to be going as high as a first round pick before his workouts. He has prototypical size but his other workout numbers weren't desirable. He looks more like a Cover 2 type corner. I don't really see how he fits into the Chargers crowded backfield.

Gaither I don't know as much about. I know hes talent and a mauler at 6'9 . A fifth round pick isnt much of a risk. Especially since the Ravens are going to have compensatory picks up the ass for Adailus Thomas and Tony Pashos. Best case Gaither is a long term fit at LT and a replacement for Ogden. Worst case they lose a fifth round pick, when they have a million draft picks anway. As always the Ravens prove to have one of the smartest front offices in the NFL

I don't know that much about the draft, but rarely do things happen in it. And how many supplemental draft players end up being good? I know that some of these guys could have been high regular draft picks...but circumstances change

For those of you who don't know, the Supplemental draft runs like this: Like the NFL draft in that each team gets a pick from worst to best...However, teams can pass on those picks...why? Because if you use said pick, you lose that pick in the next regular NFL draft. So, if the raiders chose to take Paul Oliver right away (who i think was a projected first rounder, potentially), they would not get a 1st round pick next season. As for the impact of trades changing picks, etc...I'm not sure

If any of this info is false...feel free to correct me...but i think this is correct

Yea, You got the explanation right. The odds of a suplemental draft choice becoming good are just as good as a 7th rounder becoming good. It's a shot in the dark, but every now and then you find a Marques Colston/Tom Brady type. With nothing really going on in sports I think it deserved more attention than it got.

Gaither will be good, as long as he stays in shape. That's the issue that hurt him.
