The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse headlined the week in NCAA Division III Football by upsetting Division I-AA South Dakota State, 17-3, at Coughlin Alumni Stadium in Brookings, S.D.
SDSU controlled the clock and outgained the Eagles 278-265, but UW-L defenders intercepted four passes, including three by Steve Teeples. La Crosse safety Nick Ihde finished with 17 tackles in the game as well.
Montclair State was also a winner over Division I non-scholarship Iona, but DIII could not pull off the trifecta as Wisconsin Lutheran was blanked by Valparaiso, 54-0.
Defending champion Mount Union handled Averett 64-7, while national runner-up Wisconsin-Whitewater cruised past Lakeland (my school) 75-14.
Whitewater boasts two NFL Draft hopefuls in wide receiver Derek Stanley and running back Justin Beaver. In the season opener, Stanley caught eight passes for 196 yards and four touchdowns, but Beaver was held to 52 yards on 11 carries and just one score.
The biggest upset of the day for intradivision opponents was No. 15 Washington & Jefferson getting knocked off by Salisbury, 32-14.
Looking Ahead
Several prominent schools have the week off next week, including Mount Union and UW-Whitewater. The Midwest Conference kicks off its schedule next week, and this writer will hopefully have better news to report from Lakeland as I'll be staying on campus to watch the Muskies battle Carthage.
