Before I begin this first column, I’d like to give an introduction to the format. I created this feature for The Lakeholm Viewer, the student newspaper at my alma mater when I was the sports editor. Basically I just picked random sports topics, labeled them as a “high or low,” and talked a little about them.
When I became the managing editor, I had a bunch of people – even non-sports fans – say they had really enjoyed it and it was always the first thing they read in the paper, so I moved it to page two and started hitting all subjects, not just sports.
This weekly column marks the return of the Highs and Lows in its original format – all sports almost all the time. Keep in mind this is my first crack at this in a few years. I may be a bit rusty.
Highs and Lows in College and Pros (7/17/06)
High – MLB Trading Deadline – It could be a hot summer.
The past few years haven’t offered a ton of drama around July 31, but with so many divisions with several contenders, there are dozens of trade scenarios floating around the league. Sure, only one or two may actually go down, or maybe none of them. But I have a feeling a blockbuster may just happen.
High – Upcoming NFL Season – Most open season ever?
I know it’s still the middle of July and last year after the Super Bowl I was ready to swear off the NFL, but I’m really pumped about this year’s pro football season. I don’t know the last time the league was this wide open in pretty much every division. With some of the big-name rookies and veterans in new unis, who knows what will happen this year.
Low – ESPN.com – Make an Effort, People
I know last week was slow in the sports world after the All-Star game, but ESPN.com was just plain disappointing. Most of Thursday and Friday Bill Simmons’ latest article had the lead story on Friday evening/Saturday it was replaced by Paul Shirley. The MLB trading deadline is looming, the NFL is on the way and that’s the best they can do?
High – Miami Heat – Zo Returns
I don’t like the Miami Heat. I’m not a fan of Shaq or Pat Riley. I hate the fact that crybaby-chucker Antoine Walker and the ever-desperate Gary Payton have rings because of this team. But you have to love Alonzo Mourning. It’s inspiring to see him play (even for Miami) and I’m glad he didn’t abandon all his hard work after one championship.
Low – ArmchairGM – Can’t we all just get along?
As Manny Stiles once said, "'-' votes cause cancer." If you’re going to "-" someone, at least respond to the comment and give some explanation, even if you feel the need to log out and explain it anonymously. Let’s show each other some respect around here. We’re all sports fans, we’re all human beings (to some degree), can't we all disagree and hate on each other in a decent manner? I mean, come on, it’s so bad I’m quoting Manny Stiles!
