MLB Power Rankings - 7/15

by twins15

1. Boston Red Sox - Just barely retain the top spot, but they still have a comfortable 9 game lead in the AL East. But I still think the Yankees might have a little something to say by the end of the season, but things are still looking very good in Boston.

2. Detroit Tigers - They have scored almost 50 more runs than the next highest team (Cleveland), and the pitching is pretty solid too. They're "only" 25-19 at home, but a fantastic 29-17 on the road. Once Zumaya comes back to shore up the bullpen they're probably the team to be in the American League.

3. Cleveland Indians - Their offense hasn't been quite as explosive as the Tigers, but it's still pretty darn good. Unlike Detroit, they're a pedestrian 21-24 on the road, but a remarkable 33-13 at home, best in the Majors.

4. Los Angeles Angels - The Angels are actually tied with the Red Sox for the best record in the Majors, though I think it's been a little flukey. Still, they're a really solid team and look like the overwhelming favorites in the AL West. The Mariners might have a shot if they make a couple of moves, but the A's don't look very good right now after getting swept by the Twins.

5. San Diego Padres - They have falled behind the Dodgers right now in the NL West, but I do still think they will come out on top. They have the best pitching in the League, and have been a little unlucky. It looks like the NL West will be one of the best races between the Dodgers and Padres.

6. Los Angeles Dodgers - They have started off great since the Break, moving into the lead in the NL West. They are a great 19-10 in 1-run games, which tends to even out, which is why I'm a little more optimistic about the Padres than the Dodgers. But if Saito and Broxton can continue to shut the door at the end of ballgames the Dodgers should be in great position.

7. Milwaukee Brewers - They're probably looking over their shoulders at the Cubs a little bit (especially if the Ben Sheets injury is serious), but they've survived a mini stumble (with the Cubs playing very well) and are still up 3.5 games. If Sheets is OK, Yovani Gallardo should remain in the rotation, bumping either Jeff Suppan or Chris Capuano.

8. Minnesota Twins - After a 4-game sweep of the A's, the Twins are only 6 games behind the Tigers in the Central. If the young pitchers (Bonser, Garza, Baker) can continue to give them quality starts, they are a serious threat in the AL. They've still got the best pitcher in baseball and a very good middle of the order.

9. New York Yankees - They're just a game over .500, but no team has been more unlucky with regards to what their record is and what their pythagorean record is. They have issues in the bullpen, but the rotation is starting to come together (especially if Phillip Hughes can remain healthy).

10. Chicago Cubs - The Cubs have won 3 in a row and are 7-3 in their last 10, which have made them into a threat in the NL Central and possibly even a factor in the Wildcard race. Don't look now, but Carlos Marmol has been one of the best relievers in the MLB this year.

Watch out, Brewers. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Cubs has won 15 out of their last 19 games. I can see them winning the division. They're a good group of ballplayers.

Watch out for the Twins as well. They seem to be coming back up, only 6 games out of the Wild Card and behind two of the best teams in the MLB, the Tigers and Indians.

Also, I'm surprised you didn't put the Mariners in. They've been doing pretty good, haven't they? Only 3 games behind the Angels, and 2 games behind the Indians. Not bad at all for a team that was expected to win third/last place..

The Red Sox don't deserve the top spot. They're 1-32 when they're down going into the 9th. 1 AND 32! They have become completely unclutch. They've played .500 ball over the past month and, lucky for them, the Yankees have done the same. There is no reason they should have 9 game lead right now. None.

Props, Meg, Props. That's all I can say. I was going to post something about this as well. Not only are they playing .500 ball, but the Yanks are catching up, and once the Yankees are hot, they are HOT!! Way to show that there are some unbiased Red Sox fans in the world.

Believe me, I'm just as pumped as the next Red Sox fan about a nine-game lead in the second half. But something needs to happen for them to keep it. That's all I'm saying. Everyone says things will get better once Schill gets back, but I'm more worried about offense. Now if youll excuse me, I have to go massage JD Drew's hammy so he can quit being soft.

I think being tied for the best record in the league is generally a good indicator of who is the best team in the league...Detroit is the team they are tied with...although, after the pre-all star whooping, I'd go Detroit then Boston

hahahahahaha. I think you'll have to do something to Lugo in order for him to get something done as well. David Ortiz is finally hitting home runs. WOW!! Manny isn't doing AS good as he did in the past, but he's coming back, Pedroia had a slow April, but he's really done well. Crisp hasn't done well offensively since he came to Boston, but it's okay since we have Jacoby now. Bottom line: like you said, like Yogi Berra said: It ain't over til it's over. We gotta keep holding on.

BTW, who has a good record when losing in the 9th? Not many teams win a ton of games when they go into the 9th down...its just math

Manny could honestly bat .250 and hit 20 homers this season and it wouldn't matter...his value is in getting Ortiz legitimate ABs...since Ortiz is getting hot, its only a matter of time till Manny does...

Exactly. The thing with the Sox is that they got each other's back. Ortiz batted in the .270s, but because Manny was feared that year, and he was batting before him, Ortiz was successful leading the AL in HRs and RBIs. Same thing goes with Manny now that Lowell is doing really well.

According to Baseball Prospectus 2007, MLB teams win 94.7% of the time when they have the lead after eight innings. So the Red Sox *should* have either one or two wins in those situations. Hard to say that's their problem...

Thanks Kwitt, i didn't think it was that suprising...Perhaps a better relection would be the sox record when they lead in the 7th...a markedly more valuable statistic in line with how good the pen is and how the team plays with killer instinct

To JutMSY4, Tigers are definitely 1st. It's not just the sweep that Detroit had against Boston, it's everything. Rogers has come back and he's 3-0 so far. They've recently surpassed Cleveland for first place. They've done so well without Rogers that you HAVE to put them in 1st. If the Craig Monroe decision works to Detroit's advantage, they'll be almost unstoppable. They're still my pick for the World Series...

Manny had 7 RBIs over the 4-game series, so he's off to a pretty good start, Ortiz hit one homerun, we'll see what happens. I'm not saying teams are going to be 32-0 when being down after 8 innings, but they should be able to put MORE THAN ONE comeback win on the board through the first half of the season. Ortiz has spoiled us rotten over the past few years with his clutchness, and it has seemingly disappeared. BTW, Coco is on his way towards being respectable, but I think next year there will be a legitimate battle to roam the triangle in center next spring between him and my boy Jacoby.

Crisp is the result of an investment...he will be played in-so-much-as they can't trade him (which I think they can)...its hard to believe, but the sox could trade him and wily-mo for prospects and still feel good about themselves... But, I wouldn't make that move this season...if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

I don't think people understand how much Ortiz has helped us since he's come to the Red Sox. In 3 years, he hit what? 8 GW homers? The record is 12. And that one game that the Sox won this season was questionable because Lugo was supposedly "in the way" of the Orioles pitcher. I think Coco is doing better than last year. He's getting big base hits, believe it or not. Ortiz was amazing those years, and I'm grateful for what he's done for the club over the years, but I think we're taking him and many other players for granted, myself included.

Brewers are considered a surprising team. I don't really consider them surprising. They got amazing, young players: Fielder, Hardy, Gwynn Jr., Hall, etc. They got an OK starting rotation and one of the best closers in the NL: Francisco Cordero. I'd put the Cubs closer to them, whether it's moving the Brewers down or the Cubs up because they are catching up to them, they are on fire as of July. I'd consider THEM surprising, especially since they lost around 90 games last year...

Well...the mets are 51-40, the pads are 50-40...The mets division consists of basically the Braves, Phils and...we'll throw in the Marlins because they're at least competitive... The pads get to play the Dodgers, D-backs and rockies...all of which have been decent during the year and even the giants played some good ball...this, to me, merits the pads at 5 and the mets at...wait...they're not on the list?!

I was thinking the same thing. Why aren't the Mets on the list? I don't know? Why aren't the Mets in in front of the Padres? That's a question that I'll pass because it could go either way.

I think the Yankees should be excluded. They aren't legit yet. They're just one game above .500 right now, which is where they started a long time ago. Twins and Cubs could be a tossup, but the Mariners definitely deserve to be in there since they are so close to getting the lead in the AL West division, which is hard to do, especially when there's a team with the best record in MLB right now...

Twins15, I said the M's should be in the top 10 on your site, and you're getting the same results here. Besides, I know you're going to go for the home team in the Twins. Romiezzo, of course the Yanks should be excluded. That, and the fact that you're a Red Sox fan!

Just because ESPN thinks the Yankees are relevant, doesnt mean they are. That team is toast and has been since May.

Where are the Mariners?? Best record since June doesnt count for anything?? Being one of 5 teams with a legitimate shot at the playoffs doesnt count for anything??

Yankees - One Game Over .500

Mariners - 13 Games Over .500

That's a good point, Christof. I would like to see those teams as well. The Yankees have been playing well this month but putting them 9th in the power rankings is a gift. The Indians and Tigers are playing very well this year and one of them should be #1 in the power ranks. I have a question for you twins15- I know I'm a Yankee fan but where are teams like the M's and the Twins who happen to be ahead of the Yankees in the Wild Card race.

I think the Yankees have been really unlucky (losing a ton of 1-run games) and so their record isn't really indicative of how good they are. They are 7-14 right now in 1-run games... that stuff tends to even out. The Mariners are the opposite. This isn't really a slam on the Mariners, because they have performed well in close games, and maybe they can keep that up. It normally doesn't happen that way though, which is why a team like the Yankees is on the list and the Mariners aren't... I just based this on who I thought were the 10 best teams in baseball, not who has accomplished the most up to this point.

I thought this was a list of the best teams in baseball NOW, not what you think might happen. If you look at the Mariners bullpen and the Yankees pen, you can see why they have had the success (or lack thereof) in close games.
