Look for Yankees to Target Lowell; 3 years/$45M?

With Alex Rodriguez apparently out the door, look for the Yankees to make a quick and big strike once they put in place a new manager for the team. Considering they need production from third base, and given that they won’t have any third prospects ready in the near future, look for them to go after Mike Lowell immediately. Here’s why:

  • Lowell is a former Yankee. He knows what it means to be a Yankee and will easily and quickly fit it.
  • It will improve their team defense. Lowell is a gold glover at third – he is also a former shortstop.
  • It will give the Yankees a PR edge over the Red Sox. Nothing like taking away the Sox World Series MVP.
  • The Yankees don’t have any third base prospects who are ready for the majors, at least not for another two or three years.
  • Filling third base sooner rather than later allows Cashman to spend the winter focusing on other team needs.
  • It creates leverage for Cashman to negotiate with Scott Boras and ARod. Even with Lowell on board, the Yankees could still sign ARod. Lowell could move to first.

Look for something along the lines of a three-year, $45M offer from the Yankees to Lowell. The Sox are unlikely to match that, so it would be tempting for Lowell to take it and return home.

The yankees will not get Mike Lowell for 3 years 45 mil because the sox are willing to pay that too... The yankees will probably need a 4 years deal and it will probably need to be around and/or above 60 mil...

Agreed. Mike Lowell is going to probably stay in Boston unless the Yankees make a better deal for more years than the Red Sox are willing to offer him.

"Lowell is a former Yankee. He knows what it means to be a Yankee and will easily and quickly fit in." He played in 8 career games as a Yankee in the Majors (batted .267, in case you were wondering). Saying he knows what it means to be a Yankee is like saying Eric Gagne knows what it means to be a valuable member of the Boston Red Sox.

I thought about that for a solid 15 minutes after they won on Sunday...how does Eric Gagne feel right now? He has a ring, but he, personally, did all he could to prevent the Sox from winning the ring? It's not like he's Royce Clayton and didn't play EVER, he was a detriment to the bullpen. I almost passed out when I saw him warming up in Game 4.

Also: former shortstop? First of all, that would be irrelevant. Secondly, he's never played shortstop in the MLB. According to BaseballReference, he played 9 games at second base, and 5 games at DH, and 1253 games at 3B, and that's it.
