Random Observations in the Day in Sports (10/11/08) - Note: Mostly NLCS

Posted by JuTMSY4

Football was weird today.

NLCS talk-a-bout during the game (If Liveblogging includes someone tell you what's actually going on, I won't be doing it)

SNF if you're so inclined

FYI - Fox appears to be picking the Dodgers...

Seriously, has any network been so biased to the team they want to win?

Kevin Kennedy can't imagine the Dodgers losing three straight to the Phillies - They swept them in 4 earlier this year The Phillies haven't won in LA all year... - true, but the Dodgers haven't won in Philly all year and the Phillies only made 1 trip to Dodger stadium...sooooo

what does it mean? Your beer is "drinkable?"

That in and of itself describes Budweiser fairly well...

I think "drinkability" means you can drink 20 in an evening without getting sick of the taste. Not too sweet, not too robust.

Peter La Fleur: Probably not.

Patches O'Houlihan: No, but I do it anyway because it's sterile and I like the taste.

Well Moyer has blown it 2 clinching games in a row and now the Phillies have gotta rally. If only the Dodgers had the bullpen of the Mets (or Mariners).

A well-needed bye week for both teams. Willie Parker will be back next week, which is really exciting. I don't think he should play much though, we're playing the Bengals.

Is Washington as strong as everyone seems to think?? I don't really think so, no way you should lose to the winless Rams, who are no longer winless, obviously. The NFC south is definitely the best division in the NFL right now. Carolina, Atlanta and Tampa all 4-2, and New Orleans is 3-3. I have Carolina winning the South in the end.

I really like it when there is next to zero penalties in football games. In the first half there was just 2 total penalties. One committed by SD, one by New England. San Diego's offense is really clicking (Philip Rivers: 12/19, 179 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT), and SD has the 17-3 lead at the half. Can the Bolts get back up to .500 tonight?

Ohhh, almost forgot. LT reached 11,000 career rushing yards earlier in the game. He's just the 17th player ever to do so. I am really looking forward to seeing how close he can come to passing Emmitt Smith on the all-time list. Anyone with me??

Wow, what an ugly pass from Matt Cassel. He threw it straight down at the ground on 3rd and goal.

HAHA. Belichick wants to go for it on 4th and goal and Cassel tries to pull a Matt Schaub (run it in from the 2-yard line).

San Diego's D is doing fantastic, and what a goal line stand from them. If the Pats can't even score when they had a first and goal from inside the 5, then how are they gonna pull off a win!?!?!

24-3 San Diego. Oh wait, Norv Turner is head coach so that means they can still blow this.

But seeing Mr. Belichick's face as they get wiped out again is soooooo gratifying.

I don't know about you, but I have a feeling they are pulling for a Dodgers/Red Sox World Series. One because of the big ratings, two because of Manny against the Sawx, three because there will be no small market team in the Rays, four......I guess they just hate the Phillies.

This is a quote from the book I have "What's Wrong With Sports" by Howard Cosell.

"Tim McCarver is unbearable. He's got that whiny voice. He talks incessantly about irrelevant things. I feel for Jack Buck on CBS. He's a fine announcer, but McCarver drags him down."

And 4 pages later:

TV journalist interviewing Cosell: Tim McCarver said Harry Caray told it like it was before anyone ever heard of Howard Cosell.

(Cosell laughs)

Cosell: Timmy is now a big man in baseball. I interviewed Timmy throughout his career. I really felt that Timmy was a good soul of of great overachievement, of vaulting ambition, and in the context of the broadcasting industry as it presently is, he is achieving. But his remark is ridiculous. And I would like for him to tell me, when he, Tim McCarver, or anybody else fought for Muhammad Ali's constitutional rights, or Curt Flood in his suit against baseball.

Those are matters that affect a whole society, not a baseball game. Does this deprecate Mr. Caray? In no way. Mr. Caray has taken by storm the local population in Chicago. He owns them. And he can sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" in a very enthusiastic way. I think he absolutely belongs in the Hall of Fame.

They called back and said McCarver was livid and pissed off with Cosell's rebuttal.

It's bad enough to have to watch the Phillies play some of the worst baseball I've ever seen...but to have to listen to these two jerks? There oughta be a law. I do think the Phillies should plunk Martin every time he bats, though. ;-)

Also, Belichick has the audacity to call timeout with :02 left down 30-10, but the pass is no good anyway and that's the game.
