Phillies/Rays World Series Game 2 Open Thread

Posted by SSreporters

About 1 hour away from the first pitch of game 2 at the Awful Orange Juice Trop.

I simulated the game on Whatifsports using the projected lineups and DHs, and here it is.

Scott Shields certainly ripped into Philly....had to simulate that game 3 times because Percival kept coming in.

Play nice everyone.

It wasn't called a strike (it wasn't)and the appeal said he didn't swing (he didn't)

Regardless of what an ump does with his hands, it's what he says that's more important...

That was the correct call, not a missed one.

Rollins to the rescue, that ball sure had some spin and Rollins caught it on the run in the gap and throws Cliff Floyd out at first.

But Navarro hits one with some spin up the gap as well and Chase Utley can't make the diving grab and it's a base hit.

Baldelli strikes ou.....wait, no swing called, it was a check swing and that's a bad call. ???

Checkgate, JuT? ;-)

Wait, I think the umpire called Baldelli out, and I think the 1B umpire overruled him.

So the result? A slow ground ball and Feliz can't make the bare handed pick up and the bases are loaded.

Don't let them get you down, Manny Stiles. I remember your name... let the ungrateful remain ingrates. They will get their just desserts. I hope I spelled all those words right, but then again...

I HATE Tim McCarver too... Well, Hate is a strong word I suppose, for a pompous, ignorant, egotistical, overblown with hot and poison-gaseoused talking-head. Other than that he's fine! Why give him the power of hating him.

On those Backstreet Boys... I never liked em... Never disliked them either. Never listened to them, for that matter. But, I DO think the commentary around the country has been a bit unfair, in a way.

Artistically, musically, dramatically, what they did with a song was borderline-genious.

HOWEVER: You just can't change the structure, rhythm, repeated sentences, and otherwise deconstruct and build-anew your National Anthem as backstar boys see-fit. It's pretty-much sacrilege.

I'm Canadian, by the way. Our 'O Canada' is too plain, I think, for anything hot like that to be built on top of it. Your anthem is much richer, lyrically, musically, dramatically.

So these boys have been chastened, but it's a shame for the country and baseball, really. That is because there is NO SUCH THING AS BAD PUBLICITY in show business. I was suspicious of that line at one time, but watching the Madonnas, Brittanys, Hiltons and others with all their hootin's over the last few years has convinced me otherwise.

They should not have screwed around with 'The Star Spangled Banner'. They created Bizarre Mangled Manners, instead. Bad boys, bad! To the back of the street.

Actually, I enjoy the 2 sets of rules

But I don't really like the DH. I do think its better than watching the pitcher hit, but at the same time removes so much strategy to the game...

at least in the NL, pitchers have some sort of excuse for not pitching as many CGs

my bad... Charlie's DH was in spot 8 and slot 7 in the first two games, respectively. respect. he seems to be a man I ought to respect... JB

I agree that the DH is a position that needs to be Deep-Sixed. NOW would be nice!

But WE ARE using the DH for now, and strategically, the more you make it work for you the greater chances the team will win. it works better with some power and in the SIX spot... no higher. that's what the Rays done did...

It's no disadvantage for the Phils to have to use a DH, hitters always hit, whether they play everyday or not. It is however a HUGE advantage for the Phils now that the Rays pitchers will have to hit the next three games.

its relative, the counter argument to the DH for an NL team is that the NL team is short one bench player while the AL team is short a garbage reliever...

they are not using the dh in the most opportunistic place, as I said. you are right about the pitching, however... that is great drama... usually a pitcher or two hits very well. that makes the game so much more interesting...
