AGM Writers/Reporters

Posted by Falcon02520

While Mr. Stiles was announcing his new course of action in the writing field, a thought came to my mind:

There is a mixture of young hopefuls and season writers here at the chair. Most of whom all write for the sheer joy of voicing their opinions and interacting with others. Yet, some are here because they hope that they can develop into more than just a so called "blogger" and advance into a field in which they can make a living out of this type of work. Whether it be a reporter, writer, or whatever. Armchair seems to be the stepping stone for young users who hope to refine and hone their skills into something a little more than what it is they already present. Hoping for other users to help by offering advice and making pointers on the content, style, and overall ability of their work.

The question presented to everyone here is this:
Which AGM user(s) do you believe could write professionally? Who would make a great reporter/analysis? Could they do it right now, or are they still developing their skills? Who would you want to write a book? Who would you want to report the news? And how far could they go... all the way to the very top or a writer for the local paper?

Just a fun little conversation to see what users get held in a little higher regard for their abilities.

oh and I could see Niteowl doing it now! His skills are developed and same with Manny...Manny could write as a reporter too, I think is emotion and character is great! Also, SSR is very informative and I enjoy his writing...Romi could most likely write for some online site, like a bigger one or at the least keep up on their directory :] Also Falcon, you are a very nice writer too, I haven't read a lot of your stuff, but I do think you are great from what I have read...you could make it past a local paper in my opinion...at the least

It is going to be amazing to read his articles, since OFD is more passionate about baseball than basketball. I can tell that he's passionate about basketball, but I can't imagine anything OFD is more passionate about other than basketball due to the articles he's writing.

Yes, it was. It raised a lot of great points, and it got me thinking a lot about the Tigers and how there is a lot more competition in the AL Central and for that spot in the AL Wild Card now. I had been wanting to talk about that for a while though, and I knew OFD was going to post an article involving a preview of the Tigers eventually. When I read it, I couldn't say I was in awe about how good it was, because it was OFD's, but check this: he is only 16 years old! Posting articles like these at such an early age really impresses me, and makes me wonder what the heck he's going to post as he gets older and gets a wider vocabulary.

IMO, I'd say OFD and Falcon02520 are the two people who have a lot of potential in becoming two very good writers. I know OFD wants to become a journalist; whoever employs him is extremely lucky because they will have one very good writer. The same will go for Falcon if he decides to do something involving writing.

Now, it's just stuff like AGM Milestones and stuff like that.

Which AGM user(s) do you believe could write professionally?

There are a lot of users who I believe could write professionally, but I'd say Falcon/OFD have the best chance.

Who would make a great reporter/analysis?

SSreporters seems pretty knowledgeable of what goes on in the world of sports. Plus, he updates us pretty quickly.

Could they do it right now, or are they still developing their skills?

I honestly think they could've done it either way.

Who would you want to write a book?

Definitely Kelsdad or Niteowl. They have seen decades of baseball, and I believe that either one of them could write a book about what they have watched or been through.

Who would you want to report the news? And how far could they go... all the way to the very top or a writer for the local paper?

Agent0 has definitely got something going. He's already posted something in a newspaper already, which is a definite plus.

Me. Duh...

I crack me up regularly.

All the "oldheads" - anyone pre-'07 - are tied for second.

The rest of you newbies are second and a half.

Jamel is well... what comes after dead last?

I like most users more for who they are and their behavior/demeanor more than what they post. I do like authentic individuals with original concepts more than large volume reguritators. Anyone can rewrite an AP release.

There's a bunch of solid individuals with well crafted opinions on this site. When I first started here, I thought they were all dorks and geeks. Now I think they're kinda cool for being dorks and geeks!!

I can't list all of the writers I enjoy - The list for sucky writers is shorter, for sure. I will always prefer humor over analysis, though.

And nothing makes me yawn faster than fantasy sports articles that are presented as serious analysis. I know this is what many people think the internet is for but I don't care about your fantasy team, dorks. You can have fun with that, but...

1) you're all liars and brag about winning your leagues when your analysis is clearly sucky and it comes down to mostly shit luck anyway,

2) would you play playstation and tell me about that? At least PS requires a tangible skill and

3) You already need a life if you are obsessed with fantasies about dudes and if you write about it because you NEED to share this with US, well, do the math... It's very Sports Guy-ish to me... yeech.

4) I'll show you what a fantasy article should be: how about this for a title - "How to use mind control to destroy your fantasy opponents" or "Advice, Lies and Reverse Psychology to give the people you are trying to beat" or "Fantasy 'Experts' - what are their qualifications?" or "How to ruin a Fantasy Draft the RIGHT way - with Naked Babes"

A while back I wanted to do a "AGM Users Readability Index" - where I would do a "power rankings" of the writers over a given period of time. But alas, I am kinda lazy... I guess it's not a dead idea yet.

Besides, most of the real creativity comes in the comments sections. And a lot of articles basically write themselves...

From what I've learned - Most beat reporters are fans of teams other than the team they cover. It actually makes their job easier... It seems that MOST baseball beat writers love college football more than baseball. And they talk about their favorite teams throughout the game that's going on in front of them. Of course, it annoys the piss out of the "charity blogger" in the press box...

Frank, encouraging people to go the distance and becoming better writers is what makes AGM so great. The more we encourage, the better people get for writing. Yes, we talk about sports, but we can usually go off topic in the locker room about this kinda stuff. Commenting people on their great articles doesn't count. Being positive is definitely key here, and I love the fact that a lot of people are so positive here. Many people here deal with it if they don't like this kinda thing.

Or you can just write for the sake of writing. I've never once wrote an article thinking I would get 20 votes or 100 comments, I wrote it because I thought it was interesting. I've written some really good stuff which didn't get anywhere near the response I thought it would and I've written some stuff to which I've been shocked at the response. So all I can say is write what you feel, your talent will come out naturally. Kelsdad to me is the most informative writer and there are some writers like Romiezzo who should write more often but know he is doing a lot of behind the scenes work at the Armchair and probably doesn't have time. Manny is the most humorous writer and his writing about the Arizona Fall League along with Kelsdad's reports kept me looking for their articles. JuTM is a very good writer and would love to see him write about the Astros.
