John Schuerholz, Mad Genius -- or just Mad?

21
Vote

by DNL

Mark Teixeira, Octavio Dotel, and if he had his way, Bronson Arroyo, too. That would be John Schuerholz's July bounty.

Schu transformed a good Atlanta Braves team into a true contender, but at a huge cost -- his top three prospects, per Baseball America, and two other top 20 guys. Oh, and Kyle Davies, who fell out of favor in Atlanta, but is one of those good players with upside. As Tim Dierkes of MLBTradeRumors.com said, "If you're a Braves fan, you're really have to admire John Schuerholz's willingness to go for broke." Heck, I appreciate it as a Mets fan.

And I think, as of 36 hours ago, it was the right move. But fast-forward to right now -- just after the closing bell of the 2007 trade deadline -- and I think Schuerholz misplayed his hand.

Why?

Because the Boston Red Sox are the 2007 version of the New York Yankees -- that 2 ton gorilla that no one wants to face.

Here's what I think Schuerholz was thinking: strike while the iron is hot. Or, more likely, strike while the rest of the world isn't.

First, the NL is a crapshoot. There are seven teams, other than that Braves, fighting for four playoff spots. Each has a pretty equal shot at those for spots, and with the additions of Teix and Dotel, the Braves suddenly make Mets fans -- like me -- nervous about how strong our hold is on the NL East. If they make the playoffs, the Braves are definitely good enough to get to the World Series.

But that was true for years -- literally, over a decade's worth. What's new now?

The Yankees, with their lineup of All-Stars and their rotation of, well, more All-Stars, probably won't be playing in October.

That means that there's no Death Star waiting to obliterate the competition. No need to pray that something weird happens, like the Tigers pitching surges against a slumping A-Rod. No need for a clutch stolen base from Dave Roberts. The Yankees aren't in the way.

So, Schuerholz probably gambled, that whomever the NL champ faces -- be it the Tigers, Indians, Angels, Mariners, or Red Sox -- the National Leaguers have a real solid chance against. Roll the dice now and your odds of hitting sevens is solid.

Eric Gagne may have changed all that. With the Red Sox bullpen now featuring Gagne, Jonathan Papelbon, and Hideki Okajima; and with Jon Lester back from cancer recoupment, the Red Sox are a beast come October. The bullpen is arguably as good as the John Wetteland/Mariano Rivera tandem from the mid-1990s; their rotation solid especially if Curt Schilling comes back; and their offense a mix of great and Julio Lugo/Coco Crisp. Anyone who faces them in a 2-3-2 series is likely to be overmatched.

Schuerholz may have plotted well enough to get Atlanta to the World Series. But the team he will likely face there won't be as weak as he had hoped.

Braves have an outstanding scouting and farm system. They will be able to withstand the losses that these trades caused.

Winning the NL wildcard is like winning the NL west...no way Colorado can get in there...they'd have to finish ahead of either san diego or LA...doubtful St. Lou i'll give you...that division is weird...anything could happen...

They're only 3.5 out of the division lead. That's way too close to count them out.

I think he is a mad genius, but not everyone understands his ways. I've read his book, and there are a lot of people that have problems with him and his approach. However, anyone that can stick around with a team for so long as a general mananger, and win that many consecutive division titles with a decent but not great payroll must be doing something right.

Last year, everyone was writing off the NL but the Cardinals came through (thanks to the bad fielding by the Tigers pitchers). Even without the homefield, once again, I think it's a none issue for the Braves that Gagne has gone to the Red Sox. Even if Schuerholz knew that the Gagne trade will go on, I say he will still make a run to win it all this year.

I think getting the Braves back to the World Series would be a major win for Schuerholz and Braves fans. The last several years still stick in our craw; we came to expect parity with the best in both leagues, and we still expect it. Winning the WS would be gravy - just get us out of the first round, for cryin' out loud. (or into it, at this point)

As a Braves fan, I hate to see Salt traded but with the Braves philosophy of using highly touted minor league players, Schuerholz did exactly what he had to do. The bullpen gets much stronger with Dotel, Mahay and Ring; Teixeria is a 1B/HR/High Average/RBI/Gold Glove player with no peers--save big Albert's stick. If only Schuerholz could have gotten Arroyo, Silva, or Garland....but that's fine. The starting pitching will be strong enough and the lineup the Braves now produces is pretty much RHP and LHP proof and with more than enough stroke to over run the NY Mutts and Filthydelphia Fills.

I don't think he overplayed his hand at all. He knew what he was working with, and he knows who he's working with in his scouting department.

He gets a lot of draft choices if those players leave, and with the Braves scouting department, those will be quality picks.I think Schuerholz was thinking of winning the World Series, not who he faces in the World Series. I think he expected other teams to make moves, that is why he made the moves that he did. He got a helluva lot of pitching for literally nothing, which is offset by the fact that he gave up so many prospects to get Tex.

Am I missing something? The Yankees haven't won a world series since 2000. "Something weird" has happened for six straight years, in 3 of which the NL has won the world series (2 against the Yankees). I just don't follow the logic. I'm not sure the BoSox or Yankees have been on any NL GM's mind at the deadline in the recent past, nor should they be/have been.

Here's the thing. The Braves have long been contenders. Consecutive playoff appearances since when? '92? '93? But only one World Series title... which was 12 years ago. The time has come for the braves to put it on the line and get some hardware in their trophy case.

didn't make the playoffs last year, but your point is valid...still...you can't mortgage the farm on magic beans...Tex isn't a magic bean, but they did give up a decent amt of talent (mccann or no mccann)....its risky...but it could payoff both short and long (relatively) term...

I don't understand why people insist on looking at this trade simply from the perspective of a one year time period. “Will this help the Braves win this year?” seems to be the question sweeping the blogs, but it hardly addresses the bigger issue here. Even if the Braves somehow fall short of their World Series dreams this year, the trade has left them in an EXCELLENT position to attain it in 2008. The Braves will likely lose Andruw Jones to free agency, but will acquire compensation picks for his departure (starting to refill the gaps in the farm system). I see some of the money formerly used to pay his contract (14 million) used to help offset the Teixiera salary, with the rest going towards attempting to resign Dotel. Dotel will fill the bullpen spot (and attain the salary) that will be vacated when the Braves allow the aging Bob Wickman to walk (still leaving them with a bullpen of Gonzalez, Dotel, and Soriano to close). The rotation will be getting back Mike Hampton, which will certainly add much needed depth (granted he’s given Braves fans little to be confident in recently). Smoltz will return as the ace, a revived Hudson will be the 2, followed by Hampton, James (very well suited for the 4th spot), and Jo Jo Reyes/Buddy Carlisle. I expect all other positions to be filled by those who are occupying the spots this year with a Harris/Diaz platoon in left and a Johnson/Escobar platoon at second. Brandon Jones (http://web.m...sp?n=Brandon Jones&pos=OF&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=447761) should be ready to play in the bigs by opening day, and could play either center or right (moving Francouer to center, where he played in the minors). For those of you keeping score, that’s 4/8 position players that have been All Stars. Not bad. If John Schuerholz is still feeling the itch to trade/acquire in the off-season, he can sign a center fielder or can use Renteria to trade for one and plug Yunel in at SS. Maybe I’m just an optimist, but I see the future bright for the Braves. I’d love to hear other opinions though.

I gotta agree with you. Everyone is talking about Mark Teixeira and how much he'll help the Braves for this year. You gotta think about what he'll do in the long run. Anruw Jones might be gone, and even if he isn't, he still isn't doing that great. With a third baseman like Teixeira, you got a guy with great defense, a good bat, and just a good all around firt baseman.

I also have to agree with you! Andrew is not getting the job done at cleanup!I think that when the dust settles, the team will be as solid as anyone! With Mark in this lineup,it will make a huge impact from #1 all the way to#8 esp.the way they can turn the lineup over from inning to the next! The pitching will be good enough down the stretch and even better come october!Roger McD is a very catable pitching coach and Terry Pen.will have a feel good story with these guys to work with....the farm system will be able to rebound because the Braves will be a very desirable baseball club to be recruited to play for!!!Bobby C will have lots of options to work with;I just hope he doesn't"over=manage" which is the only thing that I see him do a few times....

Who cares if Andruw goes? He probably will cause he didn't hire Scott Boras to get him peanuts (and I seriously hope the braves don't pay him high $). The lineup is just fine without him. What the Braves really need is a #3 starter next year when Hampton inevitably craps out. They aren't going to do anything without a solid #3.

Atlanta has to MAKE the World Series to find it not so easy. Although they have been competitive for 16 years, they frequently haven't made it past the playoffs. Even when they clearly had the better team...

Did I miss something? The Yankees are three games out of the wildcard. The Indians play about 12 games more against +.500 competition and 10 of those are against the Twins who always surge in the second half. Why, exactly, are the Yankees out?

Yeah, the braves will be awesome next year too. Also, they gave up only 1 major league ready player. The rest of the prospects they gave up are 2-4 years from a shot at the majors, much less being solid everyday contributors, or more.
