Highs and Lows (8/7/06)

Ok, kids I know you've been itchin' all morning to get your eyes on this week's episode of:

Highs and Lows in College and Pros: This Time I Actually Mention College Stuff!

Tour de France – Low – Floyd Landis Fails His ABCs
A as in Test A. B as in Test B. C as his Cycling Career. Floyd Landis made complete fool of himself by not turning himself in as soon as there was question about his Test A. He has a small window to save face and he decided to take the lowest of all roads and make up five terrible excuses. Absolutely shameful. (By the way, I know there's still a very small chance he can prove his innocence, but I'm not counting on it.)

Chase Utley – High – Streak Great for Phillies
Utley may have fallen short of Joe DiMaggio, not surprisingly, but while the media was obsessed with the streak, the Philadelphia Phillies were able to make a quiet push for the wild card. We’ll see how they do now that the media has caught on.

NFL HOF – High – Great Class Has Great Class
Troy Aikman, Reggie White, Warren Moon, John Madden, Rayfield Wright, Harry Carson… that’s a whole lot of history and precedent-setting. What a great class of Hall of Famers. The only thing I didn’t like is that Michael Irvin didn’t go in with Aikman, but in retrospect, Irvin’s off the field character doesn’t really fit with this class anyway.

NCAA Coaches Poll – Split – Number One Spot Good and Bad for Buckeyes
Like many on this site, I'm not very fond of pre-season polls. Usually though it's because The Ohio State University isn’t give its due credit. But now that I see the Buckeyes on top, I foresee a season full of intense criticism of every single mistake now that the polls have given Ohio State a chance. It’s ridiculous to put that much pressure on a poll done before practices start, look at the University of Oklahoma.

Odd News - Low - Skater Disproving Stereotypes
Wolfgang Schwarz, who won an Olympic gold medal in figure skating was sentenced this morning to serve eight years in prison for plotting the kidnapping of the teenage daughter of a prominent Romanian businessman and hold her for nearly $4 million in ransom. Who said all male figure skaters are pansies? No word on whether Scwartz will be used as a model for writing the villain for the upcoming movie Die Hard 4.

It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Good Characters...

Some, including myself, believe that only those with good character deserve to be recognized in the capacity of "fame"

Then start a Hall of Good Character, and we'll all (be completely unqualified to) criticize your choices!

Voters are only supposed to base their decisions on on-field play, not personality or off-the-field antics.

Notice, I didn't say that I don't think Michael Irvin deserves to be in the HOF. I just said I was OK with him not being in this class BECAUSE of his character.

Good! I'm glad I could make your day!

By the way, I'm choosing to ignore your sarcasm as you chose to ignore mine in the first sentence of the article. (Not everyone is a smug as you apparently are, but at least not everyone has to hide behind the anonymous tag.)

If you don't like this column, you don't like good writing. And why hide behind the AF mask?

I don't know if this is true, but Landis said he was tested multiple times throughout the Tour de France and this was the only one to come back positive. Why would Landis start taking testosterone part way through and wouldn't it have shown up in more than one test?

I understand that. But the fact remains this test was before the stage that he magically busted out and took the lead.
