High and Lows (8/14/06)

Refill that coffee mug, Monday is here. On the bright side, that means it’s time for this week’s episode of:

Highs and Lows in College and Pros

Before I begin, I want to say that this week’s column goes out to you, Anonymous Fanatic #1. I know how excited you were to read this column last week, so I’m dedicating this one to you; my biggest anonymous fan.

Minnesota Twins – Low – Liriano Done for Year?
No one’s really sure what’s going to happen with rookie sensation Francisco Liriano this year, and I find that very disappointing. As much as I like to see the Twins lose, I’d rather they do it fair and square, not because their missing one of the best players.

MLB Sweeps – High – No Dog Days This Summer
Everyone thought that the Kansas City Royals sweeping the Boston Red Sox was big news, but then this weekend both the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers got swept as well. Just when the playoff picture looked to be clearing up, things have become interesting again.

OSU Alum – Low – Ex-Buckeyes, Current-Cons
I know the Maurice Clarett story has been beating into the ground three times over, but I vomited in my mouth when I read this quote: "The first thing that ran through my mind when I heard about it is, I don't know what got into this guy," said Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie Santonio Holmes. Holmes, as you may know, is scheduled to go to court for his own crimes. Apparently he knows what got into himself.

MLB Records – High – Pronk Ties Grand Slam Mark
Cleveland Indians’ designated hitter Travis Hafner hit his sixth grand slam of the year in an 11-run first inning against the Royals yesterday. This tied Don Mattingly’s single-season record set in 1987. Hafner has 45 games to top Donnie Baseball’s mark. But of course, Hafner is not an All-Star and is nowhere close to David Ortiz when it comes to clutch hitting, right? Please.

NFL Preseason – Split – Down Goes Portis
The NFL is really the only league where people complain about having preseason games. Those complaints are about to get louder Washington Redskins’ running back Clinton Portis suffered a partially dislocated shoulder last night against the Cincinnati Bengals. It’s being reported that Portis didn’t want to play in the game in the first place. Personally, I think football is football, a preseason game is meant to get you ready for the regular season and part of the regular season is your team suffering injuries. It’s too bad for the ‘Skins, but injuries are a (big) part of the game.

NCAA Football – High – The Clock is Ticking
I’m very excited about this year’s college football season. I think the BCS should be wide open with all of last year’s top schools losing a significant amount of significant players. I think this year will be a dog fight to the last week and show BCS doubters that the regular season is, in reality, the playoffs.

Its sad to see Liriano's flame burn out so quickly. It would have been a great story if he came in and won the AL Cy Young as a rookie.

Yeah, then he could flame out like Doc Gooden, Mark Fidrych or for that matter, Fernando Valenzuela... most recent great pitchers started out slow and inauspiciously (Maddux, Clemens, Randy Johnson, Smoltz, Schilling, etc.) Maybe it's for the better

I think Doc Gooden flamed out for a slightly different problem than Liriano is facing. It was more what was in his nose than his arm, if I remember correctly.

Liriano will be fine. This is expected for a rookie pitcher because he isn't used to working so hard for such a long period of time.

out of all the injuries ever suffered in the preseason, portis' injury has to be the coolest. he absolutely leveled keiwan ratliff.

The preseaon is still important. It's the only way to get teams ready and you're going to have casualties, whether it;s the preseason or the regular season. I don't want to watch crappy football in the beginning of the regular season, so I'd rather have them play the games and probably only have to watch a little of the crappy football when it doesn't matter.
