I know many of you have been eager for this and the day has come. The 7th Annual Herbie Awards were announced yesterday. See the article here. Kirk Herbstreit is a former Ohio State QB and is a College GameDay analyst. He continually favors OSU year in and year out but this year he is singing a slightly different tune. Not only does he barely mention OSU, he goes against a lot of other College Football analysts with his choice for 2007 Big Ten Champion, Penn State. Most analysts and experts are choosing Michigan or Wisconsin. Below are the Herbies awarded to Penn State this year:
Quarterbacks - What A Difference A Year Makes 1. Anthony Morelli, Penn State
Inside Linebackers - Definition Of The Position 1. Dan Connor, Penn State
Cornerbacks - Just Throw The Other Way 1. Justin King, Penn State
Safeties - These Guys Belong On A Poster 3. Anthony Scirrotto, Penn State
What's My Name - Players who will be household names by Oct. 1 Evan Royster, Penn State
Conference Picks - Mark It Down Big Ten: Penn State
Best Student Sections 1. Penn State -- They continue to raise the bar with the white out. The music adds a festival-like atmosphere. I've never seen such support in all my life.
Top 10 "GameDay" Locations 10. Penn State -- The weather always will be lousy and the fans always will be there to support the team and the show. Seeing the white out in person never gets old.
While I don't hate Herbstreit he does annoy me with his constant favoritism towards Ohio State every year. I know it's hard to bash your Alma Mater but your a sports analyst. You have to be impartial and unbiased. He apparently went with that approach for his 2007 Herbies. And for best team in the Big Ten.
I don't think PSU will win the Big Ten. But they will definitely be competitive. I think 10-2 (my predicted losses are @ Michigan, and vs Wisconsin). Which will give them a solid January 1st Bowl Game (Capital One if Mich and Wisc make BCS, Outback if only 1 does).
I wish I was in State College this fall for the home games. Notre Dame, Ohio State, Wisconsin. Wow.
