Five Hot and Five Cold (05/26/2005)

The baseball season is in full swing. We almost at the end of two months of baseball play. The season has been full of surprises from the better-than-expected Detroit Tigers to the re-emergence of aging pitchers such as Tom Glavine. Below is a list of "Hot" and "Cold" players of the moment.

Hot, Britney Spears Hot Circa 2000

  • Carl Crawford: The man's got six stolen bases in the past two days and has gone 8 for 9 over the same stretch. Crawford is smoking hot.
  • Manny Ramirez: The sleeping bear is finally waking up. Man-ram. homered in his third consecutive gave Wednesday, this time going 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored. He now has four homers and 10 RBIs in three games. Makes me angry that I traded him away a couple of weeks ago in my fantasy league.
  • Curtis Granderson: Granderson is beginning to fulfill the potential he showed in the minor leagues. Over the past four games, Grandy has 7 RBIs and 4 runs. Can someone say this year's Grady Sizemore?
  • Gil Meche: He's always had a great arm, but could never put it together. Meche has sparkled over his last two starts. Yesterday, he allowed only two runs and six baserunners in seven innings versus the Baltimore Orioles, while striking out 10. Meche has had 17 strikeouts in his last two outings. Here's to hoping that Meche turned the corner.
  • Brad Penny: Brad Penny is putting together a fine season for the Los Angeles Dodgers. So far he's 5-1 with a sparking 2.51 ERA. With some nagging injuries behind him, Penny looks poised to have a career year this year. Kudos to those who drafted him.

Alright, Alright, Alright . . . Ice Cold

  • Andy Pettitte: Pettite was tattoed for seven earned runs in three innings against the Nationals. Pettite's been rocked in three out of his last four starts. There doesn't seem to be any explanation. So, I am going to make one up. George Steinbrenner regrests not signing Pettite to a long term deal and planted a chip in Pettite's brain to make him pitch poorly this season. That way Big George can sign Pettite for cheap this offseason.
  • Greg Maddux: I don't know about you but, I was rooting for Maddux after he went 5-0 with a 1.35 ERA in April. Unfortunately reality has set-back-in. Maddux has gone 0-4 with a 7.81 ERA in May. The last time he went winless in a month was September 2001. Wonk Wonk Wonk.
  • Carlos Lee: Lee is in a 4-for-19 in his last seven and has one homer since May 9. Some guy in my league told me that Lee was better than Vladimir Guerrero. Yup, he really said that.
  • Marcus Giles: Giles stinks this year. He's batting .236 and is batting .209 in his last nine games. No explanation for this performance, but I am sure its frustrating to own him in one of your leagues.
  • Felix Hernandez: King Felix is about as effective at pitching as King George is at governing. This so-called-phenom has been a dud. This is beyond a sophmore slump, this is a complete regression. He's got a 5.84 and 1.66 ERA and I don't see those coming down.

Actually Carlos Lee homered in his last game, a Brewers 6-2 win over the Reds.

I was thinking about that too. And I think it is silly to say that El Caballo is better than Vlad, but look who's on the better team. Had Carlos not fallen into the slump he's in right now, he'd have to be a serious contender for second place in the NL MVP voting.

Carlos is an extemely streaky player, even with when he was with the Chi Sox. Don't get me wrong, he's a great ballplayer that most teams are salivating for. Vlad is just that notch above that makes him a truly elite player.
