Dumb Quotes of the Week (1/19/07)

I haven't posted these in a while so I thought I'd get back in the habit.

The Clippers began to sell many of these Clipper Nation shirts last spring.
The Clippers began to sell many of these Clipper Nation shirts last spring.

"Look at the Clippers, even when they had a great run last year they were not the toast of the town nor did they bring in loads of fans."

Umm. This is entirely false and must be coming from an East Coast guy. At Sports Chalet which typically had a bunch of Laker gear, now started to have Clipper stuff. Clipper Nation shirts were popping up out of everywhere. They were taking the town by storm. Clipper fever was in the air.

"Barry Zito is vital to the future of the Angels."

Okay, Joshkross, I finally got it on here. I am not saying that Zito would’t be helpful. Paying him over 100 million for seven years makes him definitely not vital.

"Peyton Manning is finally poised to win the big one."

What makes you think that? Against Kansas City he threw just one touchdown while completing three to the other team. Against Baltimore he failed to throw a touchdown, but still managed to throw two interceptions. He hasn’t played all that well. I guess maybe he is playing at home. I am not saying that he can’t win, I am saying nothing leads me to believe that this is his year.

This week's winner is...

"Favre needs to retire. Should have retired about 5 years ago. He is a shell of what he use to be."

Have you watched any Packer games this year? Of course he isn’t as good as he once was, but he hasn’t lost too much of his ability. What he has lost is great players. He use to have a great offensive line, but now the Packers have three rookies starting. He doesn’t have as much time to throw. In addition his running backs are on the downside of their careers (Ahman Green) or too young to make a big difference (Vernand Morency). Not all of his interceptions are his fault. Sometimes he’ll throw it and it’ll bounce off a guy’s hands and the other team grabs. Sometimes the defensive back will out-jump the receiver to pick it off. Its not like the number two quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, would be any better right now.

The Beast respects the general public and the ArmchairGM community. Therefore he will not present the names of the people who have made these statements.

I'd love to know how Zito will be vital to the Angels when he signed with the Giants...

Unless the season ends with a rematch of the 2002 World Series...

I actually posted an opinion about Zito and the Angels. I chose to nominate myself. He wasn't vital at the time. Of course he isn't now because he plays for the Giants.

I believe I am the author if the winner this week! :) I still stick with the opinion that Favre needs to go. He is a liability these days, not an asset. Just look at his stats, especially his TD to INT ratio. Just plain awful.

He threw more passes this year than ANY season, with a MUCH lower completion % than any season. All things considered, he wasn't THAT bad (unless you take out the last Bears game - 4 TD, 1 Int) All in all, Beast said "It's not like the #2 QB is any better right now", I retort - the #2-infinity QB for the Packers aren't any better right now, sitting at home, watching on TV... ha ha.

Do you really think that Brett Favre hurts the Packers. He is clearly better than half of the NFL's QBs, Alex Smith, Aaron Brooks, David Carr, J.P. Lossman, Jon Kitna, Grossman (at times), Brad Johnson, Chris Weinke, etc. If you compare him to other NFL Qbs you'll notice that he is in the top half. Its only when you compare him to himself in 97 and 98 that he seems bad.

No, I think he still has something in the tank (not a trophy, but still). I want him to play for another 8 years and bounce from team to team as many times as possible.

Favre does hurt the future of the Packers. His future dictates how they draft, how they practice, and how they play. He's hijacking a football organization by stunting its growth. The Packers know they can't win a Super Bowl with Favre at quarterback, he should hang it up and let them build towards the future. And Favre was 25th in the league in passer rating, behind most of those guys you listed above. He was terrible for most of the season
