Corey's MLB Power Rankings - 7/3/06 - American League Dominates

12
Vote

by user Corey Kempf

Should we just call the All-Star Game a win for the American League and be done with it? Is there really a need to play it this year? Clearly the AL is the better league, and if each respective teams' record didn't prove that, hopefully interleague play did.

The National League teams must be not-so-secretly thanking the baseball gods that interleague play is over, and they can get back to playing against teams their caliber.

With that said, six of the top seven teams on this week's list are from the AL, with the lone NL team being the Amazins, who looked anything but amazing against the Red Sox and Yankees.

Ironically enough, however, the biggest mover this week is an NL team, the Colorado Rockies, who managed an 11-4 record in interleague play.

Rank Last Team Record Comment
1. (1) Detroit Tigers 56-26 Does anyone else find it strange that the member of the Tigers' rotation with the worst ERA was the one who got elected into the All-Star Game?
2. (2) Chicago White Sox 53-28 It was rather fitting that A.J. Pierzynski initiated the knockout blow with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to sink the Cubs on Saturday.
3. (4) Boston Red Sox 50-29 The Red Sox are an incredible 41-2 when leading after six innings. This for a bullpen that has been soft at best in recent years.
4. (3) New York Mets 48-33 The last time the Mets had four starters in the All-Star Game, they won the World Series (1986).
5. (8) Minnesota Twins 45-35 If Francisco Liriano doesn't make it in on the Final Vote, it may be considered one of the greatest All-Star travesties of all time.
6. (5) New York Yankees 46-33 Maybe A-Rod's two homer, seven RBI game on Sunday will finally win some of the fans over. Maybe? No?
7. (9) Toronto Blue Jays 46-35 In the past seven games, Lyle Overbay is batting .433 (13-for-30) with five home runs, 11 RBI and seven runs scored.
8. (10) Cincinnati Reds 44-38 Aaron Harang is 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA in his last three starts, all against American League opponents.
9. (7) St. Louis Cardinals 44-36 Albert Pujols has a hit in all but two games since his return, but the Cards just seem to keep finding ways to lose.
10. (15) San Diego Padres 43-39 Thirty-eight year old Trevor Hoffman (0-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 20 saves) was named to his fifth Midsummer Classic.
11. (6) Oakland Athletics 42-39 Barry Zito has lowered his ERA from a 3.51 to a 3.28 in his last three starts but hasn't won any of them.
12. (14) Seattle Mariners 42-41 With a .324 batting average and five homers in the month of June, Adrian Beltre is now living up to at least half of that gaudy salary the M's dished out a year ago.
13. (19) Colorado Rockies 42-39 Of all the teams you think would have the National League's best interleague record, I'll bet the Rocks (11-4) weren't one of them.
14. (18) San Francisco Giants 42-40 The Giants only scored 2.6 runs per game in Jason Schmidt's five starts in June, a big reason why he was 1-1 with three no decisions despite a 2.80 ERA during the month.
15. (12) Los Angeles Dodgers 41-40 If he were still at shortstop, Nomar Garciaparra is an easy pick for the All-Star Game. Now that he's at first, he may not get in at all.
16. (19) Arizona Diamondbacks 40-42 After starting the season 8-0, Brandon Webb finally got his ninth win on Sunday, a streak of six starts dating back to May 26.
17. (11) Texas Rangers 41-41 Gary Matthews' home run-saving catch was one of the best plays I've ever seen, but that's about all the good I have to say about the Rangers these days.
18. (13) Houston Astros 40-42 So far, Roger Clemens has been outdueled by two young pitchers on the rise and faces a third youngster in Carlos Marmol on Monday.
19. (16) Milwaukee Brewers 40-43 Someone just does not want the Brewers to have a healthy rotation. Tomo Ohka's first rehab start was postponed due to rain.
20. (20) Baltimore Orioles 38-45 Erik Bedard hasn't given up a run in 16 straight innings.
21. (23) Los Angeles Angels 37-44 Jered Weaver has been absolutely spectacular so far, going 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP in his first four starts.
22. (24) Cleveland Indians 37-43 Travis Hafner (.312 BA, 22 HR, 66 RBI) looks to be a humongous casualty of the All-Star Game caused by the designated hitter.
23. (21) Philadelphia Phillies 37-44 O, Ryan Howard, how you deserve to be on a better team.
24. (22) Florida Marlins 35-43 Could anyone have imagined that the Marlins would have the fifth best team ERA at this point in the season?
25. (27) Atlanta Braves 35-47 Chuck James is 2-0 and has given up just three runs in his first two starts since being moved into the rotation.
26. (26) Washington Nationals 35-48 In his last eight games, Alfonso Soriano has hit just .061 (2-for-33), leaving many to believe he has hurt his value before the trade deadline.
27. (25) Tampa Bay Devil Rays 35-47 Even though the D-Rays were 11-7 in interleague play, they still managed to lose five of their last seven, all against the bottom of the NL East.
28. (28) Chicago Cubs 30-51 The fact that Ryan Dempster is still the Cubs closer is yet another reason why Dusty Baker should be fired.
29. (29) Kansas City Royals 27-53 Mark Redman: All-Star. Perhaps it's time for Major League Baseball to rethink that whole "every team gets a representative" idea.
30. (30) Pittsburgh Pirates 28-55 Actually, maybe the representative from every team idea is a good idea. After all, it wouldn't have looked very good for the host to not have one.

Mets in 4th? Are you kidding me? Ahead of the Yanks? Who just won that series? Bad call right there. Also, I would put the Fish in front of the Phils.

The Mets still get the nod over the Yankees because they are the only NL team with a remote chance of winning the World Series. The Yankees, right now, are fighting to stay in third place in their own division. You have to take these things into account with this thing.

I agree on the Yankees being ahead of the Mets. I think the Mets will be better in the long haul, but the Yankees are definitely better this week. Also, kind of surprised you still have the Cardinals that high. They just lost five out of seven, including two losses to the Royals! In their one win against KC, they allowed 7 runs. Getting Pujols back should give them a shot in the arm, but unless Pujols suddenly becomes a starting pitcher, middle reliever, closer and outfielder, the Cardinals have issues.

Bad call on Clemens, too. He got outdueled by Francisco Liriano in his first start, and he got outdueled by Nate Robertson in his second start. We all know what kind of pitcher Liriano is, and Nate Robertson is 8-3 with a 3.14 ERA in the AL. Those two can not be put in the same breath as the next guy he faces, who is 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA. And we all know how much better Clemens is in Houston. He made progress in his last start. He will not lose tonight.

You guys seem to be forgetting that the season series between the two teams was 3-3. I suppose I could rank all the teams by best record of the week if that's what you guys want.

I'm not saying that's what I want, I just thought that's what you were doing. Maybe it was a different power ranking where I was having this discussion, but I remember having a discussion about the power rankings being reflective of what a team did lately, not so much what they'd done overall. Was that someone else?

There's a lot of stuff you have to take into account. You can't just rank them by overall standing, or who had the best record in the last week. Why should the team with the best record in one league be penalized for one series when they're still more likely to go to the World Series than the teams you guys are saying they should be behind.

Okay, I guess I misunderstood what you were doing. I thought you put more weight on the performance of the team that particular week than you obviously do.

If you use that logic, then the Cardinals should be rated ahead of the Twins, because as a division leader, the Cardinals have a much better chance of appearing in the World Series than the Twins. Similarly, the Cardinals are 2-1 against the Mets this year. A small sample size? Absolutely. But the Mets have gotten pitch-slapped by the AL recently.

See, I follow his logic on what he's saying, because he's talking about the number one team in the National League. A team that is also dominating their division. You're trying to make that comparison using a team that is just 6 games above the fourth place team in its divison. A team that went something like 9-16 last month. His argument, whether or not I agree with it, makes sense. What you are saying is not logical at all, nor is it the same argument.

There has to be a balance between what the teams have done lately and what they have done overall. Power rankings aren't a list of the top World Series conteders or the hottest teams of the past week, but instead a combination of the two. I think he nailed the rankings.

And the best part is, none of this will be true in a month & a half!!! There's more to rank a baseball squad on than record when the calendar reads July - LOTS of games to be played boys... good work!!!

Hey man all I said was that he was facing his third straight young pitcher. I made no predictions he would lose or anything. Marmol did impress me the one time I saw him pitch though.

Besides, Clemens was facing the Cubs. Telling me he was going to beat them is like telling me the Royals are going to miss the playoffs.

Love the rankings and that you create discussion, but of course the Rockies would be expected to do well in interleague play. Their ballpark is just different enough to create havoc for unfamiliar teams and I'm sure their pitchers love playing in cavernous parks like SAFECO Field or McAfee Colieseum.

You call being in first place by 3+ games struggling, ASwaff? What would they have to do to be succeeding, lead by 10 games? How picky are you?

By the way, Cardinals looked awfully bad tonight losing to the lowly Braves. I don't think they can play like this the rest of the season, I'm just starting to wonder when they'll turn it around. And I don't think their home city will remain quietly confident too terribly much longer.

If we really got down to tonight's games, Pittsburgh was the only NL Central team to surprise me, and that's only because they beat the Mets. Sure Houston and Milwaukee won too, but Houston played the Cubs, and Cincinnati's pitching was just barely worse than the Brewers' to hand the win to the Crew. I mean, All-Star Derrick Turnbow blows a save in the top of the ninth, then Todd Coffey (not that his was particularly surprising) blows the save in the BOTTOM of the ninth. I tell you, you've GOT to feel confident when you get to some these clubs' bullpens.

It's kind of surprising how bad some of the bullpens have been this year, even on teams that traditionally have good or great bullpens. I think the only Major League bullpens I'd really have faith in are the Rockies, Padres, White Sox and Tigers. Aside from Pepelbon, the Red Sox have struggled. The Yankees bullpen is old, and still fairly effective, but definitely not what it used to be. The Rangers bullpen folds like a cheap card table, and the Braves don't even have legs to hold the table up. The Astros are struggling with Lidge and Wheeler, and the Cardinals are hurting. The list goes on and on. The bullpens that are good are really great, but there is a huge disparity of bullpen talent this year. Closers are still good, but so many teams struggle to get the ball in their hands with the lead.

Excellent job with the rankings, Corey. These are nice work, even if I disagree with a few of the choices.
