Corey's MLB Power Rankings - 7/3/06 - American League Dominates

Should we just call the All-Star Game a win for the American League and be done with it? Is there really a need to play it this year? Clearly the AL is the better league, and if each respective teams' record didn't prove that, hopefully interleague play did.
The National League teams must be not-so-secretly thanking the baseball gods that interleague play is over, and they can get back to playing against teams their caliber.
With that said, six of the top seven teams on this week's list are from the AL, with the lone NL team being the Amazins, who looked anything but amazing against the Red Sox and Yankees.
Ironically enough, however, the biggest mover this week is an NL team, the Colorado Rockies, who managed an 11-4 record in interleague play.
| Rank | Last | Team | Record | Comment | |
| 1. | (1) | Detroit Tigers | 56-26 | Does anyone else find it strange that the member of the Tigers' rotation with the worst ERA was the one who got elected into the All-Star Game? | |
| 2. | (2) | Chicago White Sox | 53-28 | It was rather fitting that A.J. Pierzynski initiated the knockout blow with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to sink the Cubs on Saturday. | |
| 3. | (4) | Boston Red Sox | 50-29 | The Red Sox are an incredible 41-2 when leading after six innings. This for a bullpen that has been soft at best in recent years. | |
| 4. | (3) | New York Mets | 48-33 | The last time the Mets had four starters in the All-Star Game, they won the World Series (1986). | |
| 5. | (8) | Minnesota Twins | 45-35 | If Francisco Liriano doesn't make it in on the Final Vote, it may be considered one of the greatest All-Star travesties of all time. | |
| 6. | (5) | New York Yankees | 46-33 | Maybe A-Rod's two homer, seven RBI game on Sunday will finally win some of the fans over. Maybe? No? | |
| 7. | (9) | Toronto Blue Jays | 46-35 | In the past seven games, Lyle Overbay is batting .433 (13-for-30) with five home runs, 11 RBI and seven runs scored. | |
| 8. | (10) | Cincinnati Reds | 44-38 | Aaron Harang is 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA in his last three starts, all against American League opponents. | |
| 9. | (7) | St. Louis Cardinals | 44-36 | Albert Pujols has a hit in all but two games since his return, but the Cards just seem to keep finding ways to lose. | |
| 10. | (15) | San Diego Padres | 43-39 | Thirty-eight year old Trevor Hoffman (0-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 20 saves) was named to his fifth Midsummer Classic. | |
| 11. | (6) | Oakland Athletics | 42-39 | Barry Zito has lowered his ERA from a 3.51 to a 3.28 in his last three starts but hasn't won any of them. | |
| 12. | (14) | Seattle Mariners | 42-41 | With a .324 batting average and five homers in the month of June, Adrian Beltre is now living up to at least half of that gaudy salary the M's dished out a year ago. | |
| 13. | (19) | Colorado Rockies | 42-39 | Of all the teams you think would have the National League's best interleague record, I'll bet the Rocks (11-4) weren't one of them. | |
| 14. | (18) | San Francisco Giants | 42-40 | The Giants only scored 2.6 runs per game in Jason Schmidt's five starts in June, a big reason why he was 1-1 with three no decisions despite a 2.80 ERA during the month. | |
| 15. | (12) | Los Angeles Dodgers | 41-40 | If he were still at shortstop, Nomar Garciaparra is an easy pick for the All-Star Game. Now that he's at first, he may not get in at all. | |
| 16. | (19) | Arizona Diamondbacks | 40-42 | After starting the season 8-0, Brandon Webb finally got his ninth win on Sunday, a streak of six starts dating back to May 26. | |
| 17. | (11) | Texas Rangers | 41-41 | Gary Matthews' home run-saving catch was one of the best plays I've ever seen, but that's about all the good I have to say about the Rangers these days. | |
| 18. | (13) | Houston Astros | 40-42 | So far, Roger Clemens has been outdueled by two young pitchers on the rise and faces a third youngster in Carlos Marmol on Monday. | |
| 19. | (16) | Milwaukee Brewers | 40-43 | Someone just does not want the Brewers to have a healthy rotation. Tomo Ohka's first rehab start was postponed due to rain. | |
| 20. | (20) | Baltimore Orioles | 38-45 | Erik Bedard hasn't given up a run in 16 straight innings. | |
| 21. | (23) | Los Angeles Angels | 37-44 | Jered Weaver has been absolutely spectacular so far, going 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP in his first four starts. | |
| 22. | (24) | Cleveland Indians | 37-43 | Travis Hafner (.312 BA, 22 HR, 66 RBI) looks to be a humongous casualty of the All-Star Game caused by the designated hitter. | |
| 23. | (21) | Philadelphia Phillies | 37-44 | O, Ryan Howard, how you deserve to be on a better team. | |
| 24. | (22) | Florida Marlins | 35-43 | Could anyone have imagined that the Marlins would have the fifth best team ERA at this point in the season? | |
| 25. | (27) | Atlanta Braves | 35-47 | Chuck James is 2-0 and has given up just three runs in his first two starts since being moved into the rotation. | |
| 26. | (26) | Washington Nationals | 35-48 | In his last eight games, Alfonso Soriano has hit just .061 (2-for-33), leaving many to believe he has hurt his value before the trade deadline. | |
| 27. | (25) | Tampa Bay Devil Rays | 35-47 | Even though the D-Rays were 11-7 in interleague play, they still managed to lose five of their last seven, all against the bottom of the NL East. | |
| 28. | (28) | Chicago Cubs | 30-51 | The fact that Ryan Dempster is still the Cubs closer is yet another reason why Dusty Baker should be fired. | |
| 29. | (29) | Kansas City Royals | 27-53 | Mark Redman: All-Star. Perhaps it's time for Major League Baseball to rethink that whole "every team gets a representative" idea. | |
| 30. | (30) | Pittsburgh Pirates | 28-55 | Actually, maybe the representative from every team idea is a good idea. After all, it wouldn't have looked very good for the host to not have one. |
