Corey's MLB Power Rankings - 6/26/06 - Tigers Take Over Top Spot

by user Corey Kempf

After still holding the league's best record, I think it's about time we give the Detroit Tigers the respect they deserve. They just went 8-1 against the National League Central, including a sweep of Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals.

As for the New York Mets, they drop to third in this week's rankings, mostly due to the fact that the Tigers and White Sox are two of the hottest teams in the league.

The AL Central is a hotbed for teams on a roll, as you'll also find the Minnesota Twins on the rise again this week five of their six games during the week. They have now won 14 of their last 16.

Now that I've separated the hottest division, why not separate the coldest division, the NL Central, whose teams were a collective 10-28 this past week. Before I give away too much information, on to the rankings!

Rank Last Team Record Comment
1. (3) Detroit Tigers 51-25 Is it something in the water? Even the rookie pitchers, in this case Zach Miner, who pitched his first career complete game against the Brewers on Tuesday, can't lose.
2. (2) Chicago White Sox 49-26 Good thing for the Sox that their time bomb of a manager doesn't seem to be affecting their players...or maybe they're just worried about risking demotion to the minors for not doing exactly what he says.
3. (1) New York Mets 47-28 Jose Reyes is batting .430 in the month of June with a 1.201 OPS. You'd think he was batting third or fourth not leadoff with those numbers.
4. (5) Boston Red Sox 44-28 During their current eight game winning streak, Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz have combined for eight homers and 19 RBI.
5. (6) New York Yankees 42-31 Randy Johnson will face the Atlanta Braves on Monday for the first time since throwing a perfect game against them two years ago. Odds are he won't repeat the feat this time.
6. (7) Oakland Athletics 41-34 It's really quite amazing that Esteban Loaiza is 3-4 if you consider that his ERA is at a 6.34 and his WHIP at a 1.64.
7. (4) St. Louis Cardinals 42-32 Even with Pujols back, it's hard to win games when your pitching rotation can't keep you in games; Cards pitchers have the worst ERA (6.21) in the month of June.
8. (12) Minnesota Twins 39-35 When Francisco Liriano beat Roger Clemens in Clemens' 2006 debut, it was Clemens who got a story written on his "bright future" on the Twins' website. Ironic.
9. (11) Toronto Blue Jays 41-34 The Jays will no doubt be looking for pitching at the trade deadline. No surprise that Josh Towers (1-9 with a 9.11 ERA) still wasn't the answer.
10. (9) Cincinnati Reds 41-35 Ken Griffey Jr.'s slow climb up the all-time home run rankings (now 11th with 549) will leave people thinking "What could have been if not for all the injuries?" for years to come.
11. (8) Texas Rangers 40-36 At least there's one good thing to say about the Rangers' pitching staff: Kevin Millwood hasn't lost a decision since May 9.
12. (14) Los Angeles Dodgers 40-35 The Dodgers might be hurting if Brad Penny (8-2 with a 3.06 ERA) is out for any extended period of time.
13. (10) Houston Astros 38-38 The Astros have taken one game from both the Twins and White Sox and might consider themselves lucky if they can do the same with the Tigers this week.
14. (18) Seattle Mariners 38-39 Could Richie Sexson finally be turning things around? He went 5-for-5 on Sunday with two homers against the Padres.
15. (13) San Diego Padres 39-36 Despite his 101 strikeouts and respectable 1.17 WHIP, Jake Peavy is just 4-8 on the season and has only won once in his last seven starts.
16. (15) Milwaukee Brewers 37-39 Chris Capuano (8-4, 3.33 ERA and quality starts in all but one game this season) is looking more and more like an All-Star this season. But the return of Rick Helling has not yielded good results thus far.
17. (19) Colorado Rockies 38-37 Matt Holliday must've been watching Todd Helton closely for the last couple years. Holliday has a .353 batting average and a 1.009 OPS.
18. (20) San Francisco Giants 37-38 Barry Bonds left Sunday's game against Oakland with irritation in his right knee. He's listed as day-to-day and the Giants have said it's a minor injury.
19. (16) Arizona Diamondbacks 37-39 The D-Backs finally won an interleague game with their 9-7 win over the Angels on Sunday.
20. (21) Baltimore Orioles 35-42 The O's signed Russ Ortiz, thus reuniting him with pitching coach Leo Mazzone, who helped Ortiz become one of the most grossly overpaid players in the majors.
21. (17) Philadelphia Phillies 35-39 As unlikely as it may be, and I'd rather not poke fun at the situation, but this writer is still convinced that Brett Myers simply mistook his wife for Charlie Manuel.
22. (25) Florida Marlins 32-40 It appears as if someone's been reading their copy of Moneyball closer than others.
23. (23) Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 34-41 Orlando Cabrera has now reached base safely in 53 straight games, the longest such streak since 2004.
24. (24) Cleveland Indians 33-41 The frustrations in Cleveland continue to mount, as manager Eric Wedge criticized his team this past weekend.
25. (26) Tampa Bay Devil Rays 33-43 Rookie James Shields has won his first four decisions in the major leagues and has posted a 3.00 ERA in his five starts.
26. (22) Washington Nationals 33-44 Livan Hernandez's win on Sunday was the first for a Nats' starter since June 11, a span of 12 games.
27. (27) Atlanta Braves 32-44 The problems continue to mount in Atlanta as Brian Jordan is now expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a fracture to his clavicle. The Braves have already had trouble finding productive outfielders this year.
28. (28) Chicago Cubs 28-46 Derrek Lee made his return from the DL on Sunday to much of the same results the Cubs had when Lee was on the DL.
29. (30) Kansas City Royals 24-50 The Royals should probably push for new realignment, as they are 7-5 in interleague play.
30. (29) Pittsburgh Pirates 26-51 Pirates proved they belong here after getting swept by the Royals. Their current 11-game losing streak is the team's longest since 1955.

Regarding Terry's demotion, I don't think it had anything to do with him not hitting Blalock (or whoever it was). The Sox had just traded for Riske and they were making room for him. It was just an ill-timed coincidence. Ozzie can be a loose cannon but I don't think there is much doubt that he is effective.

Baseball Prospectus has the Mets as 99.14% to make the playoffs. They're a great team in a weak division.

Haha :) The BP method is to run 1,000,000 simulated seasons starting from here on out. The Mets make the playoffs in all but .86% of them. That's pretty sick.

How could the Tigers surpass the White Sox when the Sox had the same record, against the same teams, and beat them by even more? Plus the Sox are 5-1 against those same Tigers.

The Tigers proved they're for real. The whupped two good teams. Most people think the Tigers are just bottom-feeders... but the last six games showed they're not. If anything, it's a correction of the previous error.

Or maybe Corey is just full of it. :)

I think the Tigers deserve the top nod, followed closely by the White Sox. If the Mets beat up no the Red Sox this week. I think they deserve to go back to #1.

I know the Tigers are for real, I've been arguing it since April. My question is though, that they have had a better record than the Mets and Sox all year, but were ranked below them and they swept the Cardinals this week and get bumped over the Sox. The Sox swept the Cardinals too, and did it by a score of 34-9. Frankly all three could be ranked #1, I just don't get the logic.

The logic, sir, is that the Tigers own the best record in baseball, they have the best (stat-wise) pitching staff in baseball, and even though everyone is still waiting on their collapse, they've stayed solid. I think if you read close enough into my comment, you'll understand my logic. Even the rookie pitchers are getting the job done in Detroit, whereas maybe only Contreras has been consistent in Chicago. I agree on the part that any of those three teams could be No. 1.

Ya but Corey theyve had the best record in baseball and best pitching all season. This week they did the same thing as the White Sox record wise against the same teams, but the Sox completely dominated the Cardinals for 2 games, while the Tigers had to claw their way back into 2 of the 3 games. Then looking at the head to head between the two the Sox dominate that matchup. I dont want to take any credit away from them, but the simple fact is that against the better teams of the AL (New York, Boston, and Chicago) they have struggled. If they have only beaten the White Sox 1 time out of 6 attempts I don't see how they can be considered better than them. As far as the consitency with the starting pitchers Contreras has been Contreras, while Buehrle and Garcia have had two bad starts this season. The White Sox didn't even start playing well until about 2 weeks ago, and before that they were still 15 games over .500. I understand the logic as to why they are your #1, but I want to know what they did different this week than they have in any other week so far in the season to make them jump up the two spots in your opinion. I mean how can a team be ranked higher than another, have an undefeated week, and then get passed by a team below them?

I guess it was just a matter of doubting them all season until now. They deserve to be No. 1, so I put them there. The White Sox, being defending champs, deserve it too. It was just a matter of the better record being your default No. 1.

Enjoy it while you can. They'll be back in last place when intraleague play resumes. They swept the Pirates and took two out of three from the Astros, but they still have the worst record in baseball.

It sure is fun to be a Mets fan again. Finally. It's amazin' though how weak the rest of the NL looks. Are the Mets the only complete team in the league? With the Cards' pitching problems, it sure looks that way.

And while I'm not a huge fan of interleague play, in this weird season with the Mets, even at this early stage, having little left to prove vs. the NL, it was great to watch them take 2 of 3 in Toronto and now get a shot at the Red Sox, with our best vs. their best on the hill. As for the Yankees, we've already taken 2 of 3 from them this season (and were a Wagner meltdown from the sweep - the lurking chink in our armor) but we go into the Bronx with our 3-4-5 guys vs. their 1-2-3, so if we can take that series, well, damn.

But the best thing about this Mets team is watching Wright and Reyes develop before our eyes into special ballplayers. Given their age (each is 23) and trajectories, there isn't a left side in baseball that I'd trade them for.
