After still holding the league's best record, I think it's about time we give the Detroit Tigers the respect they deserve. They just went 8-1 against the National League Central, including a sweep of Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals.
As for the New York Mets, they drop to third in this week's rankings, mostly due to the fact that the Tigers and White Sox are two of the hottest teams in the league.
The AL Central is a hotbed for teams on a roll, as you'll also find the Minnesota Twins on the rise again this week five of their six games during the week. They have now won 14 of their last 16.
Now that I've separated the hottest division, why not separate the coldest division, the NL Central, whose teams were a collective 10-28 this past week. Before I give away too much information, on to the rankings!
| Rank | Last | Team | Record | Comment | |
| 1. | (3) | Detroit Tigers | 51-25 | Is it something in the water? Even the rookie pitchers, in this case Zach Miner, who pitched his first career complete game against the Brewers on Tuesday, can't lose. | |
| 2. | (2) | Chicago White Sox | 49-26 | Good thing for the Sox that their time bomb of a manager doesn't seem to be affecting their players...or maybe they're just worried about risking demotion to the minors for not doing exactly what he says. | |
| 3. | (1) | New York Mets | 47-28 | Jose Reyes is batting .430 in the month of June with a 1.201 OPS. You'd think he was batting third or fourth not leadoff with those numbers. | |
| 4. | (5) | Boston Red Sox | 44-28 | During their current eight game winning streak, Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz have combined for eight homers and 19 RBI. | |
| 5. | (6) | New York Yankees | 42-31 | Randy Johnson will face the Atlanta Braves on Monday for the first time since throwing a perfect game against them two years ago. Odds are he won't repeat the feat this time. | |
| 6. | (7) | Oakland Athletics | 41-34 | It's really quite amazing that Esteban Loaiza is 3-4 if you consider that his ERA is at a 6.34 and his WHIP at a 1.64. | |
| 7. | (4) | St. Louis Cardinals | 42-32 | Even with Pujols back, it's hard to win games when your pitching rotation can't keep you in games; Cards pitchers have the worst ERA (6.21) in the month of June. | |
| 8. | (12) | Minnesota Twins | 39-35 | When Francisco Liriano beat Roger Clemens in Clemens' 2006 debut, it was Clemens who got a story written on his "bright future" on the Twins' website. Ironic. | |
| 9. | (11) | Toronto Blue Jays | 41-34 | The Jays will no doubt be looking for pitching at the trade deadline. No surprise that Josh Towers (1-9 with a 9.11 ERA) still wasn't the answer. | |
| 10. | (9) | Cincinnati Reds | 41-35 | Ken Griffey Jr.'s slow climb up the all-time home run rankings (now 11th with 549) will leave people thinking "What could have been if not for all the injuries?" for years to come. | |
| 11. | (8) | Texas Rangers | 40-36 | At least there's one good thing to say about the Rangers' pitching staff: Kevin Millwood hasn't lost a decision since May 9. | |
| 12. | (14) | Los Angeles Dodgers | 40-35 | The Dodgers might be hurting if Brad Penny (8-2 with a 3.06 ERA) is out for any extended period of time. | |
| 13. | (10) | Houston Astros | 38-38 | The Astros have taken one game from both the Twins and White Sox and might consider themselves lucky if they can do the same with the Tigers this week. | |
| 14. | (18) | Seattle Mariners | 38-39 | Could Richie Sexson finally be turning things around? He went 5-for-5 on Sunday with two homers against the Padres. | |
| 15. | (13) | San Diego Padres | 39-36 | Despite his 101 strikeouts and respectable 1.17 WHIP, Jake Peavy is just 4-8 on the season and has only won once in his last seven starts. | |
| 16. | (15) | Milwaukee Brewers | 37-39 | Chris Capuano (8-4, 3.33 ERA and quality starts in all but one game this season) is looking more and more like an All-Star this season. But the return of Rick Helling has not yielded good results thus far. | |
| 17. | (19) | Colorado Rockies | 38-37 | Matt Holliday must've been watching Todd Helton closely for the last couple years. Holliday has a .353 batting average and a 1.009 OPS. | |
| 18. | (20) | San Francisco Giants | 37-38 | Barry Bonds left Sunday's game against Oakland with irritation in his right knee. He's listed as day-to-day and the Giants have said it's a minor injury. | |
| 19. | (16) | Arizona Diamondbacks | 37-39 | The D-Backs finally won an interleague game with their 9-7 win over the Angels on Sunday. | |
| 20. | (21) | Baltimore Orioles | 35-42 | The O's signed Russ Ortiz, thus reuniting him with pitching coach Leo Mazzone, who helped Ortiz become one of the most grossly overpaid players in the majors. | |
| 21. | (17) | Philadelphia Phillies | 35-39 | As unlikely as it may be, and I'd rather not poke fun at the situation, but this writer is still convinced that Brett Myers simply mistook his wife for Charlie Manuel. | |
| 22. | (25) | Florida Marlins | 32-40 | It appears as if someone's been reading their copy of Moneyball closer than others. | |
| 23. | (23) | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | 34-41 | Orlando Cabrera has now reached base safely in 53 straight games, the longest such streak since 2004. | |
| 24. | (24) | Cleveland Indians | 33-41 | The frustrations in Cleveland continue to mount, as manager Eric Wedge criticized his team this past weekend. | |
| 25. | (26) | Tampa Bay Devil Rays | 33-43 | Rookie James Shields has won his first four decisions in the major leagues and has posted a 3.00 ERA in his five starts. | |
| 26. | (22) | Washington Nationals | 33-44 | Livan Hernandez's win on Sunday was the first for a Nats' starter since June 11, a span of 12 games. | |
| 27. | (27) | Atlanta Braves | 32-44 | The problems continue to mount in Atlanta as Brian Jordan is now expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a fracture to his clavicle. The Braves have already had trouble finding productive outfielders this year. | |
| 28. | (28) | Chicago Cubs | 28-46 | Derrek Lee made his return from the DL on Sunday to much of the same results the Cubs had when Lee was on the DL. | |
| 29. | (30) | Kansas City Royals | 24-50 | The Royals should probably push for new realignment, as they are 7-5 in interleague play. | |
| 30. | (29) | Pittsburgh Pirates | 26-51 | Pirates proved they belong here after getting swept by the Royals. Their current 11-game losing streak is the team's longest since 1955. |
