Corey's MLB Power Rankings - 6/19/06

This week was an absolute mess. Aside from the top three, no position was safe this week. It seems like every team has either a winning streak or a losing streak at the moment.

Oakland has won ten straight, Minnesota seven, and even the Marlins have gotten in on the action with an eight game streak.

Conversely, Atlanta has lost seven straight, the Diamondbacks have been losers of five straight, and the Cubs--less surprisingly--have been on the losing end of six in a row.

Rank Last Team Record Comment
1. (1) New York Mets 43-25 Tom Glavine became the first Met pitcher to reach 10 wins before July since 1997. Good news for a team that also has Pedro Martinez.
2. (2) Chicago White Sox 44-25 After giving up five runs against the Reds on Saturday, Jose Contreras still boasts a 2.96 ERA and his unbeaten streak is still intact.
3. (3) Detroit Tigers 46-24 Chris Shelton's two dingers on Sunday matched his total for all of May and half of June combined. This after he had nine after 13 games of the season.
4. (6) St. Louis Cardinals 42-26 Two weeks are into Albert Pujols' DL stint and still he leads the majors in home runs and runs batted in. Simply amazing.
5. (3) Boston Red Sox 39-28 The Sox need Coco Crisp to start hitting if they want to put distance in between them and the Yanks. Crisp did go 2-for-5 Sunday after being mired in a 2-for-24 slump.
6. (3) New York Yankees 38-29 Chien-Ming Wang has a 2.96 ERA in the month of June, but fellow starter Mike Mussina owns a 6.27 this month.
7. (12) Oakland Athletics 38-31 If Barry Zito, who has won six straight decisions, could lower his 3.51 ERA just a hair, he could be in contention for the Cy Young Award.
8. (8) Texas Rangers 38-32 Though his power numbers are down, Michael Young is still batting .327 and is second in the league in hits with 99.
9. (7) Cincinnati Reds 37-32 Since taking over first place in the NL Central, the Reds have gone just 1-8 and are now barely hanging on to a Wild Card lead.
10. (16) Houston Astros 36-34 OK, so they just lost two of three to the Royals, but I'm almost positive that wouldn't have happened with Roger Clemens in the rotation. The Rocket returns Thursday.
11. (9) Toronto Blue Jays 37-32 Bottom line is that the Jays need A.J. Burnett back ASAP. Toronto is so desperate for pitching, they recalled Josh Towers on Sunday.
12. (22) Minnesota Twins 34-34 Not to toot my own horn or anything, but last week I said I'd be surprised if the Twins stayed six games below .500 for the entire season. Well, six games later, they're at .500.
13. (15) San Diego Padres 36-33 Could be a testament to how bad the NL West is, but the Padres lead the division with the second worst batting average in the majors.
14. (11) Los Angeles Dodgers 36-33 Despite all his injury plagued seasons of recent memory, Nomar Garciaparra (.355/.423/.589) is still one of the best players in the majors.
15. (21) Milwaukee Brewers 35-35 Ben Sheets has stated that it's unlikely he'll return before the All-Star break. Even so, the Brewers manage to stay at .500 and perhaps prove they're playoff ready now.
16. (10) Arizona Diamondbacks 35-34 The Diamondbacks have suffered an utter collapse after I ranked them No. 1 two weeks ago, winning only one game since.
17. (13) Philadelphia Phillies 34-35 The team's only complete game this year was pitched by Gavin Floyd, who is in Triple-A at present time.
18. (19) Seattle Mariners 34-37 You could easily make a case for Ichiro as the best leadoff hitter ever. It really is a shame that he came into the league so late and can't make a run at Pete Rose's hits record.
19. (25) Colorado Rockies 34-35 The Rockies can't seem to stay consistent with their offense. The Rocks scored 35 runs in a four game sweep of Washington, then score just seven in losing three to the Cards.
20. (14) San Francisco Giants 34-35 Thirty-nine year old Moises Alou has a 1.254 OPS at AT&T Park this year in 61 at-bats.
21. (20) Baltimore Orioles 32-39 Kris Benson's great night against his former team was a lone bright spot in a week filled with more underachieving from the O's.
22. (14) Washington Nationals 32-39 With the Nationals slumping, it's not a question of whether Alfonso Soriano will be moved, it's when.
23. (23) Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 31-38 The Angels have committed 22 errors this month. With a pitching staff as unstable as theirs, it's not safe to start giving other teams runs.
24. (18) Cleveland Indians 31-37 The pitching hasn't been there for the Indians lately. Unfortunately, neither has the hitting.
25. (29) Florida Marlins 29-37 Surprise! The Marlins have the best team ERA in June at 2.57.
26. (27) Tampa Bay Devil Rays 29-41 Carl Crawford is reportedly on the trading block, but, as one might expect, the price may not be right for too many teams.
27. (20) Atlanta Braves 30-40 Perhaps this is the time for the Braves to start shedding their $92 million salary.
28. (26) Chicago Cubs 26-42 Word has it that the entire student population of Notre Dame gathered to pray to Touchdown Jesus to keep Jeff Samardzija healthy now that he's officially a Cub.
29. (28) Pittsburgh Pirates 26-44 Manager Jim Tracy reportedly criticized a few of his players for failing to turn difficult defensive plays over the weekend. Welcome to Pittsburgh, Jim.
30. (30) Kansas City Royals 19-49 Royals face the Pirates this week in the first Double-A All-Star series ever.

Along with the Braves, it's time for the Cubs to have a firesale.

I agree, but who do they got that anyone would actually want? There not getting rid of Zambrano, Lee, and they'll probably hold onto Ramirez unless they can get a major league ready 3rd basemen in return. Other than that, is anyone really worth it?

Not saying they'd get anything, but I've seen Cubs fans calling for the sale of Juane Pierre. Out of spite, I guess. I think they just don't want to look at him anymore, because they certainly won't get anything worth getting for him.

I don't know why you're saying it would be good for the Braves to have a firesale. Their payroll is too high for what they've got, but who should they get rid of? Smoltz? Hudson? Chipper? Andruw? The only thing that would make sense to me would be to get rid of Giles or Renteria. Wilson Betemit is more than ready to be an every day player.

Clearly that set up isn't really working for the Braves, so it probably wouldn't hurt to lose a couple of even the big names like a Hudson or Smoltz. They might be able to get some decent prospects out of it if someone were willing to overpay for two aging pitchers.

I guess it just depends on your perspective. Unless you can't afford the payroll (like the Marlins), I don't think you should start auctioning off players when you're just a piece or two away from contention. That doesn't seem wise. The Braves are not in a rebuilding situation.

Nice Corey. I think you might have the Phils right. I'm probably going to be wrong, but you're a little to hard on the braves. They're not a last place team like they're playing...

An ideal trade partner for Atlanta right now is the Blue Jays who need pitching in the worst way. Hudson to Toronto for Overbay, Hinske, or Hillenbrand and a prospect would be a win-win for both sides.

The Braves don't need Hinske, because they already have a log jam at third base with Chipper and Betemit. And if they were to get Hillenbrand, that would have to be one heck of a geat prospect, because Hillenbrand wouldn't be enough of an upgrade over LaRoche to make that trade worth it. But yes, Overbay would be a good fit. The problem is that the Braves need bullpen pitching much more than they need a first baseman that doesn't bat for much power.

I agree the Braves need relievers, but there isn't exactly a team with surplus at that position. Perhaps they should trade Hudson or Betemit to the D-Backs for Valverde and a prospect in hopes of Valverde bouncing back. On the other hand, that's another bad closer, which the Braves already have. Biggest mistake -- letting Mazzone leave

The Rangers just gave Antonio Alfonseca his unconditional release. He's not the pitcher he was when he played for the Braves last time, but he might be worth a look.
