College Basketball Roundup will be a weekly post summarizing the latest happenings in the College basketball world.
This week is issue 3, covering "Jimmy V Week".
ESPN dubbed last week Jimmy V week, bombarding us with clips of Jimmy Valvano's speech and his NC State team's championship game heroics. Although his speech and life was inspiring, I think it was a little overdone and quite frankly I was overexposed to it. Nevertheless, the cause is very noble and I'm sure some excellent work was being done.
Let's take a look at the happenings of last week
1. The Big 10 sucks Seriously. Once again, the Big 10 was dominated in the Big 10 / ACC Challenge and lost 8-3. Then, Ohio State lost to Butler by blowing a 10 point halftime lead and losing by a ridiculous margin. If that wasn't bad enough, Michigan lost to former coach Tommy Amaker's Harvard team. Seriously, ANOTHER Big 10 loss to an Ivy League team? This is just getting ridiculous. I watched the game and it wasn't Harvard playing well as much as Michigan having no idea what they were doing. Perhaps they were too intimidated by the Crimson's "rowdy" crowd. Indiana was a bright spot in being able to subdue a very talented Southern Illinois team. Oh and I feel like throwing in that Michigan State dominated Jacksonville by 30.
2. Syracuse loses at home to UMass Overrated coach Jim Boeheim and "powerhouse" Syracuse tries to sneak into conference play without losing a game by virtue of their 'never leave the Carrier Dome' game strategy. Of course, they lose at home to UMass. Syracuse loses to an inferior team, wow. Biggest surprise of the year. How is Eric Devendorf STILL on that team? It's becoming more and more apparent that their 2003 championship season had nothing to do with Boeheim or other players, and all to do with Carmelo Anthony gracing the Orange's basketball team for one year.
3. Texas continues impressive streak. Texas is now 7-0 with very impressive wins over Tennessee and #1 UCLA @ Pauley Pavillion. Looks like they don't miss Kevin Durant THAT much. DJ Augustin is living up to his billing of being a top player in the nation.
4. Butler undefeated Butler now has wins over Michigan, Virginia Tech, Texas Tech, and Ohio State. Hats off. They could go undefeated this year.
5. Other happenings Kansas beats USC and has yet to experience a Bill Self-destruction. Oh wait, that only happens in March, my bad. Gonzaga continues to impress as well by going on the road and travelling and yet, still winning consistently. UNC beats Kentucky, causing freshman Alex Legion to transfer (way to wait it out buddy).
