Coaches' Poll For 11/25/07: What Are They Smoking???

23
Vote

by Leeweihan4687

So maybe it's not the computers that mess up the BCS (okay, it still is) but the USA Today Coaches' Poll just came out, and here it is:

1. West Virginia (37)

2. Missouri (17)

3. Ohio State (6)

4. Georgia

T5. Kansas

T5. Virginia Tech

7. LSU

8. Oklahoma

9. Southern California

10. Hawaii

11. Florida

12. Boston College

13. Arizona State

14. Illinois

15. Tennessee

16. Wisconsin

17. Clemson

18. Texas

19. Brigham Young

20. Oregon

T21. Auburn

T21. Virginia

23. Boise State

24. Cincinnati

25. Arkansas

(Poll courtesy of: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/usatpoll.htm)

What irks me is that West Virginia is number one with a win against a weak #20 UConn, while Mizzou is #2 after beating previous #2 Kansas. Wasn't there a consensus among the people that Mizzou would leapfrog into the #1 spot? Wasn't WVU not even supposed to jump Mizzou last week? How do they get to keep their spot this week, if they weren't even supposed to have it last week?

Other gripes:

Georgia's #4 even though they didn't make it into the SEC championship.

Big Ten teams keep moving up despite the fact that they're idle (Ohio State, Illinois).

Hawaii finally gets to the top ten (albeit against a weak schedule...this one's a pick 'em).

Kansas is still at #5 even after losing to its first quality opponent played.

A four-loss team in Auburn at #21? Ahead of Cincinnati and Boise State? Are they really that good? (I don't care that they were #25 last time...at least they shouldn't be ahead of Boise State, or maybe even Cincy).

Yes, there are trends in voting, and yes, they happen every single poll, and yes, this is only one person's opinion, but that still doesn't make this right, especially WVU over Mizzou. That's just bad.

It does seem a little wack, but the thing is, WVU was 3 and Mizzou was 4. A 45-point win over an overrated #20 team was enough to keep them ahead of the Tigers, who won by 8 points against an overrated #2 team. Mizzou is #1 in the AP poll, if it makes you feel any better.

And you could call WVU's whooping of UConn a win over an overrated opponent. If they don't get the BS call against Louisville, they never even sniff the light of the top-25. Overrated or not, Missouri beat Kansas. That deserves the number one spot. Missouri now sports wins over Kansas and Illinois, with their one loss coming AT number 9 Oklahoma. WVU doesn't sport a resume that good. Missouri deserves the spot.

Oh, and the AP isn't used to calculate the BCS. Being first in that poll might be nice for ego, but it makes no real difference.

I think that WV should be number 1 in the coaches, and AP poll. Pat White is gonna run all over Mizz in the National Championship.

Kansas should have dropped further than 5, I don't care that there are only 3 1-los teams! They played one decent opponent and lost, drop them to 10! If they get an at-large BCS bid I will explode!

Does it really make a difference if Mizzou is number 1 or number 2 right now? If they win against Oklahoma next weekend then they are in the National Championship. Either way, number 1 or number 2, they still have to win next week, so it really doesn't matter...

Good point! Right now they are in! If they lose it doesn't matter if they are 1 or 2 they are still out.

Yeah, it doesn't matter if your team hasn't sniffed number 1 since 1900. If you don't win the national championship, no one will care that you were number 1 going into the game instead of number 2.

it's the principle/pride of being able to be called #1. follow an extremely mediocre team who's had more than twice as many losing seasons than winning in the past thirty years and who hasn't been to a good bowl since '69 and you'll understand.

I agree - there is a principle at play here. Not to mention point margins. If Ohio State were to sneak into the national championship because of a point margin problem resulting from these rankings, it would be an outrage.

When your talking about coaches who are hell bent focused on their own team and conference and only paying partial attention to the rest of the nation, I would say that does have a lot to do with it.

KU is #5, Boise State is what, #23? 18 spot difference. The point is that KU should not be ranked so high, but both are still better than four-loss Auburn. I don't understand your argument.

If you haven't noticed the SEC is the best conference again this year and the top 6 or 7 teams could beat just about any team in the country.

"Wasn't there a consensus among the people that Mizzou would leapfrog into the #1 spot?" No!

ESPN had agreeded with themselves, I never heard a public outcry for MIZZOU being #1, they still aren't getting a lot of respect from some parts of the country.

Are they MY #1? Yes! But I don't have a vote =(

I was stunned at how ESPN downplayed Missouri's chances at the national championship. Last week, during a discussion on ESPN about the title game, someone asked about Missouri's chances, and the analyst responded by talking about Ohio State!

Georgia is in no way the 4th best team. In order to be a top 5, you either have to have a perfect record, have one loss, or be a conference champ/conference title game team

Thanks for pointing that out. I also thought this week's USA Today rankings were a sham. I hate the east coast bias argument because I believe it's overplayed, but if you look at their rankings, there is a very obvious east coast bias at work. Boston College jumped four spots after beating Miami. That's an absurd leap. Cincinnati doesn't belong in the top 25, and neither does Auburn.

But here's the one that REALLY got me - if you look at last week's poll, Ohio State didn't have any first place votes. This week they have 6. They picked up 6 first place votes without playing anyone. Six people decided that Ohio State BECAME the number one team in the country without playing a game, on the same week that Missouri beat the number two team. They need to take a serious look at who's casting votes in that poll.
