Breaking News: Yanks/Phillies have Tentative Abreu Deal

9
Vote

ESPN and FoxSports are reporting that the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees have a tentative deal to send Phillies right fiedler Bobby Abreu and pitcher Cory Lidle to New York.

ESPN's Jayson Stark reported that if the deal goes through, the Yankees will send 18-year-old minor-league shrotstop C.J. Henry -- who was the Yankees No. 1 pick in 2005 -- and 27-year-old left-handed reliever Matt Smith to Philadelphia.

The Phillies will also be able to pick one other minor-league player from an agreed-upon list, while the Yankees will take on the financial responsibilities of both Abreu and Lidle's contracts. Abreu alone is due to make $37 million over the next two-and-a-half years.

Abreu was in the Phillies' starting lineup Sunday but was pulled for Shane Victorino 10 minutes before the Phillies game against the Florida Marlins.

Foxsports.com is reporting that Abreu has given the Phillies assurance that he will waive his no-trade clause for the Yankees, presumably in exchange for the Yankees promising to exercise his $16 million option for 2008.

Due to the large amount of paperwork involved, a resolution likely is necessary by Sunday to ensure that the trade is completed by Monday's 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline.

I don't believe this. This sounds like the Phillies just got tired of shopping and took the next offer that came in.

If I were a phillies fan, I'd be very happy to get that old, lazy and rediculously overpaid guy off my team.

Overpaid? Yes. But he still gets on base at an extremely high rate... other than the financial reasons for the trades, I'm not a big fan of this for the Yanks.

What happens when Matsui comes back? Where does Abreu go?

Damon, Matsui, Sheff and Abreu make for one crowded, expensive outfield when all are healthy. But that's the Yankees. I'm presuming one of them (probably Sheff)will become the DH and Giambi will take up permanent residence at 1st.

Matsui plays left, Damon plays center, Abreu plays right. Much better question is where Melky Cabrera goes as it is silly to have a youngster riding the bench rather than playing every day wherever. Sheffield's comeback is a pipe dream and he shouldn't be sucking up any OF time anyway. He's awful in the field in a spot where, given the Yankee pitching, they need a better player. If he returns and that's a monster if, he should DH and pinch-hit exclusively. I think this deal ends any real chance he will come back, being a self-involved shit he won't like that the one team willing to sign an aging one-dimensional power hitter went out and got someone to replace him in the short and long term.

Well, the Yanks got a good bat without having to give up Phillip Hughes.

Post 2000, it's been the same old story with the Yankees. All bats, not good enough pitching. Hasn't been working, won't work now. Yanks will get bounced early in the playoffs, if they make it at all. This trade was just silly. One more old and amazingly expensive player past his prime.

They added a couple of wins with Abreu's bat and a couple more with Lidle upgrading the five spot. That is a huge swing with less than half a season left. Great deal by the Yankees.

The way it sounds, I don't think Sheff is coming back this year...

This is not a good deal for the Phillies, now or ever. C.J. Henry doesn't look to have the early makings of an MLB star, and Matt Smith is a career underachiever. Abreu can still give the Yanks five good years if they want him. It does make for an interesting situation in the Yankees OF next season.

This deal gives the Phillies salary freedom for this offseason. You cannot judge this trade until you see what the Phils do this offseason. If they do nothing, then this is a tremendously bad deal. But judgment must be held at this time.

Let's hope the media got this "tentative" deal right. I'm still waiting for Soriano to show up in Chicago. ;)

Seriously though, I don't know much about these prospects but this seems like a horrible deal for the Phillies. Philly fans should riot if their owner doesn't spend the money he is saving on this deal for players this winter.

This is stupid; there are 10 better teams for Abreu.

Assuming that Sheffield's option will not be picked up, left handers are drooling at facing a line up that has

1B Giambi LH 2B Cano LH LF Matsui LH CF Damon LH RF Abreu LH

What is Mr. Torre going to do in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings when the opposition brings in their lefty pitchers?

Of course, a big bonus of the deal is that once the fans get hold of Abreu, A-Rod will be off the hook and regain the form that made him the player that once he was.

I don't think anyone, left-handed or right-handed is drooling at the thought of facing that lineup.

In the interest of getting it right, Abreu is not 'due' $37 million over the 2 1/2 years... there's a $16 million team option for 2008, which I believe the Yankees have already said they won't pick up. So he's due like $21 million... still a lot, but not quite what's been reported.
