ESPN and FoxSports are reporting that the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees have a tentative deal to send Phillies right fiedler Bobby Abreu and pitcher Cory Lidle to New York.
ESPN's Jayson Stark reported that if the deal goes through, the Yankees will send 18-year-old minor-league shrotstop C.J. Henry -- who was the Yankees No. 1 pick in 2005 -- and 27-year-old left-handed reliever Matt Smith to Philadelphia.
The Phillies will also be able to pick one other minor-league player from an agreed-upon list, while the Yankees will take on the financial responsibilities of both Abreu and Lidle's contracts. Abreu alone is due to make $37 million over the next two-and-a-half years.
Abreu was in the Phillies' starting lineup Sunday but was pulled for Shane Victorino 10 minutes before the Phillies game against the Florida Marlins.
Foxsports.com is reporting that Abreu has given the Phillies assurance that he will waive his no-trade clause for the Yankees, presumably in exchange for the Yankees promising to exercise his $16 million option for 2008.
Due to the large amount of paperwork involved, a resolution likely is necessary by Sunday to ensure that the trade is completed by Monday's 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline.
